Hi
we had our fields fertilised last week and the farmer said we could use it this week but we have had no rain so can we still graze from it? what sort of problems can occur in the horse if they were to graze a fertilised field? thanks

Depends what its been fertilised with (organic or not) Depends on the weather and the state of the feilds. Might as well ask the person who fertilised it for you.

2 to 3 weeks - longer if no rain

The nitrogen can give the horses a nice chemical burn and don't think accidentally eating the fertiliser will do them much good either

Or do like my old YO and fertilise with nitro fertiliser whilst horse in paddock on a hot sunny day with no rain forecast - swore blind there wasn't an issue!

We have always turned out straight away once the field is fertilised and never had a problem. I only have one field so would have to keep them in. We do use a fertilizer very low in nitrogen though.

It depends which fertiliser was used as to what damage can be done to your horses, however regardless of which one, if it was only done last week and you've had no rain, then I would advise you not to put your horses out in the field until after a good rain.

Gosh there are some foolish people around.

Pleased to hear you say "my old YO".

hubby is a farmer & does ours and we are not allowed on them until 48hrs after a decent rain fall. Last year we had to wait 4 weeks cause the forcast rain that was predicted (hence why fertiliser was put on) didnt show

Tia - definitely OLD YO (have them at home now anyway) - his attitude was "well it's fine for cows" - the worrying part is they are now offering full livery at £120 a week without riding (expensive for this area!)

Oh yes, I hear this all the time over here! Do people not understand that cows are not horses - nothing like them in fact but these folks seem oblivious which is why I see the same things about boarding horses over here.

I tell you, you will NEVER have seen the hay some of the cattle farmers feed their "boarding horses" - I can't understand why anyone, even if they are not horsey folks, cannot see that the darned stuff is BLACK! Hay is not supposed to be black ever!
