How long after nail surgery before riding?

Tomorrow morning I'm having sections removed from the nails on both both big toes (feel rank typing this - I hate feet! Apparently they're not ingrown, just have the really attractive problem of nailbeds too wide for the toes :o) Foot antifetish aside, I'm ok with all of this and the fine details but am now in slight state of alarm over how long it'll keep me off ponio. Mother dearest and two on the yard can keep him going so it's purely selfish! I also have a large hilly paddock in need of poo picking and am wondering if I'm going to have to wave £ and chocolate at two of the girls...

Podiatric nurse and a colleague who had one toe done say one day, general nurse friend and the evil demons of Google are citing anything up to around two weeks til you can get boots on. Has anyone had this done - how long did it take for you ride ok afterwards? First two days are out due to comedy dressing but after that? Penguins for any info - thanks :)

I had the same op, I had both feet done and was in bandages, I went to primark and bought a pair of wellies a size too big so I could still go to the yard, Had no problem at all with any chores, Lunged instead of rode. I left it a week before I got back in the saddle :) Hope this helps. Just beware that you don't get trodden on, one of my feet were trodden on and bought tears to my eyes!

My OH foster brother had this done....he milked it a bit,but as soon as you can get your normal shoes on you should be fine

If I hadn't had new ponio on the yard for all of a month, I might normally be tempted :D

Thanks both for the advice/recommendations. Think I've got some old much larger boots in the boot so hopefully that'll cover the poo picking (where is my silver lining?!). Ponio's been pretty good at the standing still bit so far *gulp*

Ha ha well if he comes within a meter of your totsies, run to the other side of the wheelbarrow and put your toes under it lol ;)

Hi

I had to have both of my big toenails completely removed (yuck, I know). I think it was probably about 10 days - 2 weeks before I rode again - couldn't bare the thought of having boots on before then, mind you I was pretty heavily bandaged too. I think try and stay off them for the first couple of days and then, as others have said, get some large boots and see how you go. Good luck, hope they heal quickly.

Thanks very much :) So glamorous, isn't it? Was a bit freaked out to have so many people saying two weeks so late on in the face of 1-2 days but then I did always think that estimate was a bit optimistic! At least it'll give everyone else a giggle.

I lost a big toe nail doing too much ballet (pointe work is not great for the feet!) and was doing most things (including dancing) straight away...

One thing to be careful of with riding is your stirrup size vs larger boots. No reason (as long as you're not doped up on pain killers... dancers don't do those!) you shouldn't ride straight away, just do it w/out stirrups. Great for the seat (and inner thighs of you do rising trot that way!).

Good luck with the op.

Now you see ^^^ that, makes it sound glamorous:D I am no longer going to tell people I had mine removed as they were crappy, deformed ingrowing things. From now on, I did too much Pointe work... much better;):)

Hope it's gone well x

I lost both big toe nails - following summers too - think it was the left first then the right....

Mine were 'traumatic losses' aka my pony squished me! Mine were so bloody painful, possibly because of the bruising under the nail to start with. Mum (a nurse) did some 'stuff' and they felt better, then I performed my own 'minor surgery' and hacked bits out when they started falling off.

I managed to ride though after a couple of days - I had big dressings (Mum again...) but got my boots on.

Having said that, I manage to ride with external scaffolding on my foot the summer after that - I had a bad run of 'feet things'!!!

Afternoon, all

Thanks for the wishes x Pointe work! Genius. It will help me cultivate that air of mystery and hidden depths and talents I've always been after. Ahem *whistles*

Lying on sofa now with bad telly until I can get a lift to yard later to sit in deckchair ordering everyone else around :D Should give everyone a laugh - aren't the dressings HOT?! Anaesthetic is starting to wear off now (those. needles. were. not. fun. They are *nails*. They are *small* parts. What the hell goes on with the grief they can cause? I've had less painful broken bones!) BUT v happy still bc ponio and I had a lovely schooling sesh this morning and then vet arrived to jab & chip him and he stood like an absolute angel.

Podiatrist started saying no sport etc. for four weeks!!! Er, nope. There are limits...
