how long after riding do you feed?

My horse gets fed conditioning nuts and chaff.

How long should i wait after i ride say going out for a longish hack with some galloping. Although i always walk last bit so theyre mostly cooled down

so long as they are not puffy and have stopped sweating im happy to feed

If i go to the beach and have a good gallop then maybe 20 min walk trot home I wait a good half an hour, 40 mins if he is sweating worked hard or until not sweaty. Same for schooling. If we have plodded round the block or just had a little canter and walked home and he has hardly done anything then I would probably wait 15 mins or so. I may be a little paranoid as I am petrified of colic :s

I went on a hack the other day (mostly trot) and fed just over 1/2hr after. He wasn't sweaty/puffing etc.. If he had done harder/faster work I would probably leave for longer.

I wait until they have cooled down, and not sweating If I go for a 20 minute hack, mainly walking, I wait as long as it takes me to make the feeds, if I do strenuous work, I wait about half an hour to an hour.

If you are only feeding basic nuts and chop, then so long as the horse isn't blowing or sweating buckets then you can feed him. Think of yourself after exercise - you'd let your breathing and everything settle before you gave yourself a meal.

I try and wait for however long I was riding for if that makes sense - 1 hour schooling session means I'll wait for about an hour.

If I'm hacking in walk it will be less.

I dont think there is a definative answer not really. Text books might tell you an hour but depends on the horse.

In the evening after riding just on the flat for about half hour / 40mins mainly canter work and finishing with trot Ill put her away faf about with tack and rugs for about 15/20 mins then feed again as long as she isnt blowing of puffing Ill feed but then after a good cool down shes fine.

This. If he's worked hard I'll make him wait until he's chilled but if we've just had a quick plod around the fields I'll feed straight away...try making a hungry hippo cob wait for dinner when he knows its coming!!!

Kal gets fed at very set times - 9.30 a.m. and 3.00 p.m. . . . so we fit his ridden and ground schooling work in around those - generally allowing a good hour break.
