I have just topped the field with the tractor so there is quite a lot of chopped stuff lying about. How soon before I can put the pony back out on it?
How long after topping field?

A good week or so, maybe 2 if it was very long.

We did ours on Saturday and it has dried out enough to turn out again now, even though it had grown about a foot long. Providing that there is enough growing grass still on it, they should be okay to go back out on it now.

Just a cautionary tale.....
I topped a field in about July, and then put one horse back on the topped bit about a week later when it had dried nicely. He was only out there to get a bit of extra as he is a skinny TB and the others are porkers. I built him up over a few days and then left him out all night. He got colic. I'd made a load of really high quality hay without realising it and he'd just gorged himself on it. Felt very stupid, especially when the vet's bill came.
Might not happen at this time of year, but I'd be careful about doing it again.

Leave off either until the grass is died and brown or either you rake it!
