If i used a Pessoa type lungeing gadget to get my mare using her back more? The back man thinks this would be beneficial for her 3 times a week 5 mins on each rein.
Thanks
I've never used a Pessoa before but had to lunge my old horse after a back issue. He used to stretch long and low on the lunge anyway but I saw results within 2 - 3 weeks - once relaxed he would really swing through his back as he was free from a rider. When I then started riding he was better also.
you know what....by the time you have fitted a pessoa....is it really worth it for 5 mins.... if you want to get her working long and low.....ditch the gadgets and use some poles on the ground....you dont have to put them all in a line. to start with place them at 12 o clock, 3 o clock, 6 and 9. this way the same pole arrangement can be used in walk trot and canter.....this will get your horse using its hocks and working through and over the back. the horse will lower its head to look at the poles. horse will be much more relaxed than tied into a gadget that can cause resistance and tightness...x

Did you do anything to encourage working in a long and low outline? Thats what i need to encourage.

Just as show diva suggested - I started the first week just lunging then after that included the poles and it was the best thing to strengthen his back. You can then encourage your horse to shorten and lengthen depending on how far out/close in on the circle they go which will help.
I use a pessoa and rate it even just for 5 mins on each rein. If I tried to lunge my mare over poles she proceeds to jump them or the fence out of the school!! (has a few jumping issues). If you can afford to get one its worth it and has different settings so you vary your results
I use a John Whitaker training aid which is basically the same as a Pessoa and comes with the roller. It works brilliantly for building topline quickly (on long and low position). The recommendation is 20mins per session. When my TB was lacking in topline, my physio advised lungeing with Pessoa every other day, riding in between. I think you would hardly get your horse settled in 5 mins on each rein!
I do think poles are a good idea but you and your horse need to be experienced in lungeing. Many horses will get excited with poles on the ground. The handler also has to be able to place the horse correctly over the poles - often easier than it sounds!
Not very long to be honest!!, poles is a great idea to vary it
, but the pessoa really encourages the horse, once you have fitted it it does not take 1 min to slot it all on takes a bit of getting used to mind!! but it really makes no difference to putting on your saddle and bridle, in time wise once you have it all in the right place, unless you are going to use it for different horses then it will need slight ajustments, to be honest if you can afford one then go for it!, and do the pole work two,
