Just a musing sort of thread really......

To explain: I have two horses, first is my own horse, traddie cob, has his own farrier. Farrier is actually coming for a routine visit this Friday morning to do a full set. We've used him for years and years, certainly for the past three horses. In the past, when we've lost a shoe, he's often come the next day.

Second horse: loan mare. Terms of the loan are that she has - another - farrier. No complaints, he comes when he says he's coming, does a good job, does it well.

Loan mare lost a shoe this morning. Texted her farrier. He says he's "off this week", will ring me Sunday pm.

Am making no comment, or observations!!!! Yes appreciate that some farriers are working this week, others not so.

But just wondering: if you lose a shoe - how long before your farrier comes to bung it back on again???

depends on where he is and if he is working, lots of people I know wait over a week or 2 which I think is very bad, one of the horses at work is having remedial shoeing and managed to pull a shoe this morning-she lives out and was having a party with the others), first lost shoe I have had to deal with with my own farrier in over 3yrs, anyway he was on the yard within the hour as he was working locally.

Normally within 24hrs & very unusual to be more than 48hrs

Same here and mine is doing emergencies this week, however I would always offer to take the horse concerned to the forge if that made it easier for him to fit it in quickly - of course not all farriers have their own forges. I get a very good service but I also try hard to be a good customer - pay promptly (on the day), hot coffee and occasionally bacon butties offered, take horses to forge when needed!! I am lucky though that I can attend for all his visits during the mornings, I know a lot of people are at work and can't.

Back when I had my old TB, we often went a week or so. It wasn't a huge horsey area and there wasn't a lot of choice. It was really quite frustrating as during that time he'd generally end up doing some damage.

Would it be worth dropping the owner a text and suggesting they let your farrier have a go rather than wait so long? I guess it depends on your ground (probably soggy!) and whether or not the horse is in pain/ok with not being worked.

Mine was next day, sometimes same day and came out at 9pm when my horse got an abcess. Brilliant farrier and I adore him. However he's now got my horses feet to a stage whee he doesnt use shoes

usually next day, or that day if in the near area. they are happy for me to leave horse in the barn and do them while i am at work as well :) which works well for both of us. love my farrier, they always manage to fit me in, have come to find an abscess in the dark, within 10 hours of going lame, and not even charged me.
stupid boy did lose shoe x-mas eve though, and they only came to put it back on today, but in fairness i did say don't worry he will manage, they could have done it a bit sooner if i has insisted, but i knew i wouldn't have time to ride the past week and it is soft ground so not too foot sore.
personally i think 48 hours is exceptable, especially as they are normally busy and work over quite a large area.

also, on rare times they are on holiday, they actually let me know just encase and i have their friends number, as he is another local farrier.

On Christmas Eve when hunting and had a seriously loose shoe at the end of the day he came that evening. Not only did he re nail that shoe but also checked our other hunter and tightened shoe ready for Boxing Day.

He usually comes within 24 hours........and for free!!

Mine is top, he'll be there the next day - worst case day after and he won't take any money for putting it back on - I always remember to take a bottle out to sneak in his van.

This has happened to me twice this year - first time was the day before a show, called farrier at one in the afternoon, he arrived at 730. Second time was two weeks ago, called him at 0830 in the morning, he was there at 915.

Love my farrier :)

Usually at the end of the day we call, once he has finished his rounds, or the following day. Unless he is away on holiday! Doesn't charge us either, despite protests to take the money!!

I have a couple of friends who are farriers, so can always give them a buzz if it's an absolute emergency, but never had to do that, thankfully.

Mine lives nearly 50 miles away. He comes every two weeks, so if they loose a shoe the day after he's been, they wait a fortnight. Simples.

Having said that, when my cob went down with laminitis, I called him, and he was there within 2 hours.

If I'm desperate for a shoe to go back on, he'll tell me where he is going to be and I can trailer the horse over to him.

Usually same day or first thing the next - he has to pass our road on the way home, so really handy. If he is on holiday, he will always give us the number of the farrier "covering" for emergencies. He's definitely a "keeper"!!

My mare (touch wood) hasn't lost one yet in the three years I've had her but when this happened to a friend at the same yard who was due to compete that day, our farrier told her to load up and he would meet her at the competition venue! He did and she won the class.

Depends how soon I need it back on..... If I'm off to a show in next few days it will be Under 24 hours..... If not going anywhere for a bit within 3 days. I don't really mind as he does his best when we really need him!

Mine is very good. I text him on Sunday and he came out today. He was due on Thursday anyway so would have been happy to wait but even better that I didn't need too.

I'm lucky in that mine have never lost a shoe yet (touch wood) but he does my friends horses as well and its always been last thing same day, or at a push the day after. .

My horse lost a shoe on boxing day and I texted my farrier but honestly wasn't expecting him to come out until after new year (they are entitled to have holidays/time with their family same as the rest of us!). However he came out the next day and put a new shoe on. Can't praise him highly enough - he's a superstar!

We've only had a few cases of lost shoes, but he has always been brilliant and come in the next day or two, even though we always ask him to come by when he's next in the area, and not to make a special trip for it - unless the shoe is hanging off or very loose, a few days off in the field with 3 shoes isn't going to harm them.

My horse came in Monday night minus a shoe. I texted him on Tuesday morning and he replied to say he would get up as soon as possible and he arrived this afternoon (New year's Day)!

I wouldn't ask him to go out of his way for just one shoe, but if I was going to a show the following day and one came off, he would do his best to come up in a couple of hours. As he said himself, I rarely ask favours like that, so when I do he likes to oblige. He has other clients that constantly expect him to drop everything and tend to them asap, so i'm a bit of a breath of fresh air in comparison.
Otherwise If I didn't have a show or lesson on I would wait until he was in the area again, usually just 3-4 days

Rarely happens but farrier lives less than mile from field and often walks dogs down lane past field so easy to contact. She is a star and will come out asap, when I got stuck on motorway and couldn't get there to meet her she caught horse put shoe on then text me to say its done!

Usually the same day or the next day.

I few years ago my pony got an abscess, phoned the farrier who arrived within 20 minutes on Christmas eve and spent any hour battling with a toad of pony who didn't want her poorly foot to be touched and wouldn't take a penny from me. Vety large bottle of whisky was bought as a Christmas present that year!
