Hiya,

Holly has a bone from the butchers and I was just wondering how long you should leave it befor throwing it away??

I don't want her to get poisoning from it rotting or anything like that??

Thanks
A xxx

Here is a pic of her enjoying said bone

She will clean any meat off it pretty quickly I would have thought - once that has gone there is nothing to rot. I make mine have their bones in the garden - I periodically clean up the bone remains - apparently pigs jaws including teeth are off putting :D:D:D As i said unlikely she will leave any meat/tissue on it past a couple of hours tops - even if she did dogs can eat old, decaying meat with no adverse effects.

Just chuck that bone when she gets a new one:D She looks like she is loving her bone:D:D:D

Bones that have been buried and dug up about six weeks later seem to do no harm to any of the dogs here!

I will say do not give to many marrow bones as gnawing on the actual bone will wear their teeth down. The best marrow bones are the shin with the knuckle cut off as the dog will spend hours licking the marrow out.

There is no how long for us :o himself has been known to dig up very disgusting ones for a rematch. His run looks like a graveyard :o :o :o

Same here. They tend to keep their 'best' bones in their runs where they are 'safe' for a few day, then they are brought out into the yard where they are shared with each other & any visitors who fancy a chew, buried, dug up, carried around, hidden in the horses' stables etc.

Every month or so I collect up what is left lying around & bin them & the whole cycle starts again.

I do sometimes feel a bit embarrassed when we have non-doggy people up to the yard with all the bits of animal dotted around, but it keeps the boys happy & because they have free access we don't really get any squabbles over bones, they are happy to share.
