I haven't read the replies, but we had a horse on our old yard who was turned out one evening in the summer for the night, as usual. Next morning he was found trapped under a tree, the tree had fallen and he had obviously rolled nearby and somehow slipped and ended up trapped under it (we don't believe the tree fell on him). So horse was found no more than 12 hours later and he was close to death- breathing slow and laboured, no longer trying to stand, freezing cold etc
We eventually got the tree off him and got him up, but that was the closest I've seen a horse get to dying without it actually doing so. He had been there a good while as he had quite a pile of droppings behind him.
Must add that he made a full recovery.
