Im going to Australlia in October for 6months (for a gap year)

So i need to start thinking about finding someone to loan my horse while im away.

If you have a horse out on loan... how long did it take you to find the perfect loaner for your horse.?

I dont know when to start advertising him.

I want him to stay on the same yard so my friends and family can keep and eye on him, and its only for 6 months. so i know this will limit the people that will be interested in him.

My flights are booked for the 16th Oct, So its 3 months before I go.

Would you start now? I obviosuly want enough time to be able to check horse and loaner get on and time to find a new one if things dont work out, but if someone is looking for a horse now will they want to wait 3 months?

I will advertise him in a few local tack shops and at my riding school so its only people in the area will see the ad.

Do you think i should still put an ad up online for him?

arrgg after writing this post... 3 months doesnt sound like a long time

any advise please?

I only part loaned my horse to someone, to help with costs, so unlike you i still had full control. I put one advert up at my local tack shop and a couple of days later had a phone call from the most perfect older lady! She began loaning straight away, but was very patient as my horse was sent away for training, but we managed to sort everything out between us. Just be honest in your advert about when the loan will start/finish. I would just start at your local tack shop now and see how you get on. Maybe the person could get to know your horse inbetween now and October, so by the time you go it will be like leaving your horse with a friend.

I loaned my horse out but it was with view to buy through me answering someone's "wanted" ad
Their ad had only been up for a week.

If I was you I'd advertise now to get it sorted sooner rather than later, but do put in your ad that the loan wont commence until October.

Hows this ad sounding?

Calico- For Short Term Loan

6 year old TB Gelding available for short term loan from 16th October to 18th April (whilst I’m away in Australia for a gap year)
Must stay on present yard in Horwich, Bolton (Lancashire)

Excellent to hack alone or in company, doesn’t bother at all about traffic and is very sensible, even when doing faster work in open spaces.
He is coming along quite nicely with his schooling but he is still very green so needs a competent rider when schooling. He doesn’t do anything nasty, but does tend to rush.
He is still learning but is proving very willing.

He has a lovely temperament, great stable manners and has such a loveable character.

Plenty of excellent off road hacking round Rivington, and tuition available from a qualified BHSI

Livery costs £15 per week with extra for feed and bedding.
I will continue to pay for his insurance, though loaner must have their own rider insurance.
