How long did it take you to find your horse?

Did you have problems when they came through? (please elaborate!)

As I've been contemplating selling my girl and buying something bigger, its got me wondering how long I might be horseless for. I wasn't looking for a horse when I came across B by accident so my own experience doesn't count

daughters new horse took about 6 months.luckily we had a pony on loan.dont know if i was very particular but we really struggled.i wanted a 15-15.2 middleweight mare, pony club type and we travelled for miles.viewed and tried 6 out of many i enquired about and hated every minute by the end of it.had new horse 6 weeks and love her but wouldnt want to do it again.before that my horse of 14 years died and it took me a year to find another i liked.think it depends what youre after

I started looking for a horse in April 2008. Within 2 weeks I bought my first one but he turned out to be wrong for me so I had him 3 weeks and took him back then 10 days after he went back I found my beautiful mare. So i'll say 3-5weeks

Less then a week. Went to a dealer who had a big field of unbacked gypsy cobs. Picked out two, ended up with Bodey. But then your situation is different to what mine was.

Oh and Badger was the first one on HorseMart, when we put in 14hh to 15hh, Kent. We didn't see any others. So less then a week for him too.

I have never actively gone looking for a horse yet...they seem to have just fallen in my lap one way or another...

My 1st pony my auntie gave to me (her pony from when she was little

)

2nd pony came from breeder through a friend as just backed 5 year old, had a week to see if we would get on so didn't really search for him!

Last horse my auntie bought unbacked, then sold the pony and bought him from my auntie

.

So all have landed on my lap..never been to try a horse lol!

Erm, is there an 'other' option?

I wasn't even looking for a horse when I ended up with my 'rescue' horse. He ended up coming home with me because I felt so sorry for him!

sold my pony on the monday, went to see Arron on the wednesday and got him on the friday. my other pony i got the same day as we saw her. my mum doesn't hang about

OP i'm kind of similar to you- was not looking for a horse- but did not know the rest of my family were, it was a surprise for me! I didn't get a choice in what we got (but definitely didn't mind at the time!) as we bought a horse my sister had loved for ages- he started off as more her horse, i was still on ponies

Ive never really properly looked for a horse! I got my first horse in 1991, he was on working livery at the riding school I learnt to ride at - I asked parents if I could have him when he came up for sale, expecting the usual "no" and they said yes!

I had my first horse put to sleep after 6 years due to a dislocated pastern, I was given my 2nd horse by a friend who hadnt ridden her for 3 years due to lack of interest (she had her own stables so no livery to pay!) - so I didnt go looking for her either as she was free!

I had my 2nd horse for 11 years, she broke her leg in 2007. I decided to advertise on horsemart straight away for a horse on loan as I manage a yard and found it hard seeing my horses empty stable! 6 days later someone offered to bring their horse to my yard for me to try him and hes still here! Hes the only horse I looked at for loan and I have now bought him!

So.... 18 years and 3 horses later........

About 1 month all in all. I looked at 3 others and rode one who nearly put me off for life and then a work colleague of my husbands found my boy advertised in H&H...somewhere I had never thought to look!! I travelled from Derbyshire to Llandudno to view him and fell in love straight away! That was 6 years ago! He is the best!

Lol, I didn't even see mine before buying him! I phoned up at 9am, transferred the money online by 9.15 and collected the next morning! Could I be the most stupid - or lucky horse buyer EVER lol

Looked for a couple of months on the net before I found Rosie. She was the first horse I saw in the flesh and bought her the following week. All our others we have bought on the day as foals from sales, mainly New forest foal sales.

About 2 weeks

Easy purchase though as I knew her from this forum.
I looked at a few others and phoned up about loads but Tara was always the favourite.

we had mentioned to the pony club we were looking for a horse, and my friends knew etc. but we hadnt actually gone out looking. mine just landed in our laps! all thanks to my friends mum ending up in hospital one night after a fall, and the nurse treating her was Bs owner!

so they got chatting and we went to see him and we buoght him!

Sold old pony late October, Saw the boys early November, didn't like them, waited around, nothing better came up so made an offer for them in Jan, get them first week of Feb. So could have been 2 weeks, was closer to 4 months!
Pony before, sold the first in may and had a huge wait for the second, that I knew I wanted all along, over the whole of summer and got him in October.

Took me about 2 mths to find George, started looking in mid March 07 and found him in mid May. I tried about 6 other horses and with one ended up with a broken and dislocated finger and broken nose!!

I was looking for something no bigger than 15.3 and that was always the top limit I put in on horsemart...........until one day I forgot and up popped George. At 16.3 I thought too big, but he did have a kind face and was only 5 miles away and as they say the rest is history and the lady who sold him is now my instructor!

9 months and tried over 20 horses! Main problems I faced were idiot sellers who insisted there ID x TB was chunky, to turn up to find a tiny TB not suitable for my dad!! GRRR

Depends how fussy you are!
Took me over a year to find my horse but I am very fussy! Am now looking for another and it will probably take ages as i don't want to compromise on anything, particularly soundness - I've looked at several horses which were nice in many ways but had to be discounted as they seemed unlevel behind. Have had too many lameness problems to consider them!

When looking for a new horse i usually crack on and spend the day out looking at them in certain areas. Also my criteria is never really that strict, good conformation and age are probably my only main concerns. And I have got quite a few from markets/through friends which you usually know about in advance of selling your previous horse.

Just depends on how particualr you are about the horse

It took me 3 to 4 months. This is the first horse that i have actively gone looking for as opposed to them finding me. I looked all over the north island and saw some lovely horses but when I saw Spyke I just knew he was the right horse for me. He is the best, loveliest TB on the planet!!!!

Decided I would buy one on the friday bought magazine on the friday went to look at a mare on the saturday saw taf and he came home on the following friday. Had him nearly 4 years and he has never been a minutes trouble
