Have just bought some whole oats harvested in 2011, bagged in Jan 2012, so already 2 years old, will they still be good?
Haven't opened the bag yet as I may want to take them back depending on what people think.

I have no idea how long whole oats last, but obviously don't want to feed something stale or that has lost much of its nutritional value.
Any ideas?

If they've been stored properly they should be OK - problems are weevils and vermin - are they in the original sacks?

Sorry to hijack but does this mean that whole oats will not lose nutritional value in the same way rolled oats etc do? I bought some whole oats 6 weeks ago but mare is on 10 weeks box rest and a few months of bringing slowly back into work. I have been wondering if the oats will still be okay to use when she is back in full work?

They will be fine - it's only once you break the oat or any grain up that they start losing some of their goodness. Ensure you store them in a dry place where vermin can't get at them
