How long do you ride?

I used to ride quite long but since doing a bit of jumping out hacking i have moved them up a couple of holes, find it alot easier. Next week (hopefully providing she's ok) i have booked the menage for a couple of sessions and going to start some serious schooling with my young green mare, hoping to do a little dressage in the summer to see how she gets on

long stirrups here we come!

i dont ride dressage length! i always make sure my stirrups are short enough incase i find o log or too to jump but they dont really look like jumping length. if that makes any sense at all!!

hmm, was thinking bout this other day. i always ride short prob coz i have a built in thing about my legs being too long on most horses-which they are. however last week i went down a couple of holes and felt much more secure, like i could really sit.

I got sooo confused for most of your post - I thought you were talking about length of time and wondered why you were talking about holes.

I think I ride at a fairly average length - I have been told by an instructor that I should drop them a hole or two, but when someone who's pretty much the same height as me gets on after me they usually have to shorten them, so I don't know!

Mind you, my instructor is a dressage rider so she rides very long.

Interesting this came up today...had a lesson a few days ago on a school horse, and I started reasonably short, because I knew we would be jumping, but then jacked them up another 3 holes for jumping length...so would have been at least 5 holes difference if I'd started at my usual flat length.

On the Spooky Pony, if I use my GP, I have 4 holes difference between flat and jumping length, with hacking length half-way between. The pic in my siggy is at hacking length, I think. On the dressage saddle, I ride in the longest hole of a fairly long pair of straps.

Lol, I was reading your first paragraph thinking you meant how long (time-wise) do you ride. I was thinking "up to holes", what?

I much prefer short, but I have been making a real effort to try and lengthen for dressage as I still ride a bit too short for that. Long feels so weird still though, I think it just takes a while for your muscles to get used to it although its been a year of trying...

I don't know how many "holes" I am for different things as I have a dressage saddle and a GP for jumping so don't need to change the holes much! They go up maybe 2 holes between SJ and XC I think.

I've always ridden quite long and up 4/5 holes for jumping.

I'm the same. My dressage/schooling length is much, much longer than my jumping length. For hacking, I go up about three holes to enable cantering, galloping and jumping.

i ride long for dressage but like quite short stirrups to jump.

i go up around 6 or 7 holes for sj and then another 2 or 3 for xc from that.
