How long do you walk your horse off after schooling, workout, etc?

Just wondering...

I'm schooling my horse quite hard at the moment and usually walk him off for at least 10 minutes but I'm finding that it is talking a bit longer for him to cool down and his breathing to return to normal.

He is not struggling or labouring with his breathing, just a result of him working harder I think.

Any comments greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I usually find about 10 mins is about average for pickle to take to really get cooled down, particulary after doing harder excersising such as jumping.

I tend to do my hardest schooling work in the middle of the session then gradually warm down during the rest of it. If horse was still blowing I'd either walk it off till it stops or hope of and walk in hand till horse has stopped blowing.

I don't think horses particularaly appreciate being cooled down but it is for their own benefit in the long run.

I do the same - warm down towards the end of a schooling session. If I have had a hard schooling session, for exampe, I will go for a plod around the fields or up the lane to call off

I usually warm up for 10 mins, including lots of circles and bending work in walk without asking for an outline, then usually warm down for the same amount of time doing the same things at the end of a session,i would also agree with the other guys,if still blowing keep walking round for longer,i usually find 10 mins-15 mins adequate as you usually tend to ease off towards the end of a session anyway!!x
