I ask for an outline as soon as I get on, otherwise he'll just be looking for something to spook at.
Saying that though, I don't ask him to work properly for about 20 minutes.
I work the coloured for about 20minutes before asking him for any outline otherwise he just coils up like a spring and then blows!!! Neds down at Becs yard get lunged and then have a few laps of the arena before I ask them to work.
10 to 15 minutes here too (walk, trot, canter), then with a long contact walk, trot and canter for another 5 to 10 minutes and then ask for more collection and start working on smalll circles to promote suppleness, then introduce some flexion and away we go. Hopefully after the circles, flexion and counter flexion on circles they are supple, straight and off we go.
if I don't warm up properly I might as well not bother to be honest and if I tried to pick any of them up straight away i'd get zero quality.
Not very long for Dad's ponies, they don't not go on an outline, even if you lunge them off a headcollar they come round. Too bad if they are not from behind, but a 4-in-hand horse is never going to really work well.
Pip is quite similar really, I start of in walk, getting him to strech for a few mins, then push him up into medium walk. I dont ever ask for an outline, but it kind of just comes....
The horse should be between leg and rein from the word go and you should have a consistant elastic contact. the horse should always be on the aids and seeking the hand wherever it is offered. There's no advantage to warming the horse up on a loose rein or with an incorrect neck and back. Most people start by stretching horse forward and down to loosen them up but this is still an outline.
Personally, I dont stretch my horse forward and down at the start as it doesnt benefit her, she wont give a good stretch at the start. I therefore ride her in normal position from the very start with an expectation that she is even in both reins and yields to seat, leg and hand pressures.
It really depends. If he's sharp then I will get on and get cantering around, only for a few minutes though pretty quickly to get him forward, not in an outline. If not he is expected to work straight away, after a few minutes of walk on a long rein. If he's too sharp though its not sensible to walk around, so I ride him forwards to get the extra energy out of him.
I walk round the sch on a long rein then change rein walk the other way then trot round a couple of times on long rein change rein trot again on a long rein, then take up a gradual contact.....
however i have seen someone do this......
As i pulled into yard they were mounting walked whilst asking for outline into school walked to the bottom corner and trot in outline to other side then ask for canter (by this time horse had not done one full lap of our sch!) whip horse as wouldnt canter got canter by the top of sch to complete very 1st lap and then turned down centre line and jumps a jump!!! when horse was bought in 5 mins later it was blowing soo much its sides were heaving, it had its NZ rug put on it and its ears/face down its neck sponged and turned out???
i do one lap on each rein in walk without a contact, same thing when we go into trot and then I ask him to stretch long and low for the first 15 mins untill we are cantering.
