no more than 12 hrs at a time. I normally add it on in morn around 7am and take it off after work at 7pm. For my shetland she gets it off so add it back on each time.
My mare wears hers 8-10pm. Like the comment above I don't like to leave it on overnight. About 12pm I take her out for a walk and a groom so it gives her a break from the muzzle without the grass. I then lunge her at 5pm- again to get her out of the field and give her a break.
My boy had it on about 9 hours in the day to begin with as he wasn't sure how to use it but now its on 24/7 as he's fat but dont want him obese! He manages fine with it on and still eats plenty
As he's not long gone 3 I dont want to work him too much and dont like the idea of him standing in a stable for half a day- would rather him be out and muzzled.
I use the bucket type ones and tyr to swap them as they all fit differently and ard different sizes- even though they're all full!
He usually has it off for maybe 1-2 hours a day, unless he or his friends take it off!
Tried the greenguard but he didn't seem to settle in it- also my friends horse has worn her teeth down loads on this kind.
My pony wears hers all the time she is out and she is out 24/7. I bring her in when I ride my horse and she has it taken off then and access to a haynet. It doesn't bother her and she is happier kept this way.
My Highland, who piles on the weight on the barest of grazing, has 3 or 4 hours a day out on poor grazing without her muzzle and the rest of the time is either in the yard with it off so she has a break from it, or out wearing her muzzle. I do leave it on overnight as otherwise she puts on too much weight. She manages perfectly well with it and doesn't seem to mind wearing it.
thankyou for all your replies, im starting to feel less guilty about the thought of leaving it on 24/7. Shes definately overweight & needs to shift some of it, but at the moment i cant get them in from the fields to get to the arena/out hacking (having path put in to save us from mud this winter ) & dont fancy riding with 3 yearlings in the field & shes only 4 & had winter off so is likely to be loopy!
sugarlump121 like your idea of switching between makes, will get investing, shes nearly destroyed the current one. I have the roma comfort at the mo, which others can u recommend?
On another note do any of yours twist the muzzle so that they eat through the mesh part & not the hole? or is mine just odd? its been fitted correctly too!
Oh yes. Been there!!
Atm, our girl's only out an hour a day due to her bout of lami 5 months ago - but the minute she goes out she rolls including rolling her face around on the floor, then rubs it on her leg and eventually must manage to twist it - our friend's youngster then pulls it off her face
We keep a headcollar on over it and plait her forelock into both now! x
