I no longer use shavings but looking at your user name if you are trying to do some cost checking these are my beddings as an example:
In one stable I have Aubiose, cost is £10 per bale, 4 bales start a bed and one a week to maintain. This does not make a particularly deep bed
In the other stable I use two bales chopped straw (bliss) at £7 a bale and one bale normal straw at £3 a bale to start a bed then one of each to maintain per week, this bed is deep
When I used shavings I used 4 bales to start a bed and two a week to maintain, it was £8 a bale
Ponies are in for 16 hours per day. Ponies are 11.2 and 12.3
1 clean pony = 1 bag of shavings every 2 weeks
15.2hh dirty mare = 2 small bales of straw a week
14.2hh clean gelding= 1 small bale of straw every 10 days
13hh foal= 1 small bale straw every 5 days
14hh clean gelding= 1 bale shavings a week
2 bales of shavings per horse per week at £8 a bale 😞
They aren't too dirty but this keeps it clean and deep enough. I take the wet out for the one every day and the other when required so usually when I put the new bale in. They have rubber mats underneath but the one has his whole stable done as he is 16.3 and likes to sleep a lot.
Mostly one shavings a week in a very deep bed then about once a month I will need two a week, my horse is really clean though and his out all day, hunters round here are nearly a tenner so not cheap.
Was on shavings, deepish bed as horse has Arthritis, 3 bales a week (£6 a bale). He is now back on straw, a big rectangular bale lasts 3-4 weeks (£17.50 a bale). Daughters 14.2 clean pony is on shavings, one bale a week.
I put in 3 bags of Bedmax a week, taking the wet out twice a week, I also use Megazorb under the places where she pees. I have a complete bed, to the door and it is a good 10 inches deep. My mare is pretty tidy.
My horse is lovely and clean - i think it was about 3 bales to start her bed then probably 3/4 bales per month to maintain - i haven't put any in for 3 weeks now as running it down to start again, whilst it is still white and clean it was getting a bit dusty having been down for so long and it can make her out, still have a normal depth bed just no banks, tho will probably last another week when i'll start again.
I have a dirty, dirty gelding . . . a big bale of straw costs me £15 and lasts me two weeks (deep bed - about a foot deep with three foot banks) . . . he regularly goes through two/three bales of shavings a week . . . needless to say, I love straw.
My boy is a 15.3hh TB and hes a bit of a bed masher, no nice neat piles for me every morning! Hes out from 7.30-3-3.30pm, stabled the rest of the time.
I started on shavings, started with eight bales, half bed, pretty deep, then used two bales a week at £7.50 a bag which works out at about £60 a month.
Skipped out every day and full muck out once a week, took me ages as i like to get every bit out!
Switched to wood pellets to try and save cost and time, started with 8 15kg bales, half bed, quite deep but soon bedded down. ended up putting in a bag every three days at £4.50 a bale, which is about £45 a month.
Easy to muck out but had to take quite a bit more than i wanted out per day because of his mashing it up into a lovely mess. Gave up on them as it was so heavy to lift when digging out the wet, it went dark very quickly and just looked flat.
Im now on straw, i buy the 3/4 Hestons, three quarter bed compacted down to about a foot and a half high. The bale costs me £20 and i am using one every 3 weeks.
Nice deep comfy looking bed, so much quicker to muck out as i dont really have to sift through the bed as i can sacrifice a lot more with it being so cheap, Takes a bit longer to lay back down but its not heavy so doesnt take much effort.
My boy is a bit on the mucky side and I use 1 - 2 bales per week; maybe 6/7 or so per month. My shavings bill comes to around 50 quid a month (or so!).
15.1 heavyweight cob who is on rubber matting with pellets as an under layer and a bale of shavings on top. A new bale goes in once a week. In summer, he'll probably be on just pellets and far longer between bales as he'll be out mostly.
It depends very much on the horse you have in the stable. Some are very clean & fairly dry so you use far less. Others are very wet, very messy & churn the bed up mixing tyhe poo & wee throughout the bed. These obviously use more. You use enough shavings/straw as is needed for the animal you have on the bed.
I'm on straw. No idea how much is in their altogether but I started off with a deep bed and then add a bit more everyday (I try and add the same amount as I take out so it stays the same thickness). My Appy is quite wet so I usually add 2 big slices everyday, and my ISH isn't too bad so I usually just add a slice per day.
I'm really tight, lol. Therefore I take so much care to muck our properly, shaking all the loose shavings from the poo & I have a really clean 15hh pony so 1/2 a bag a week. I Have rubber matting too.
Definitely depends on the horse.
I have a have a deep bed in a good sized stable. I use 5 bags of miscanthus per month... That is what he is currently on and he is in the majority of the time (turned out 2 hours a day) and it is £6.55 a bale. He is usually clean but it depends on his mood!
Not long enough and depends upon length of time ponies are in and whether they are particularly messy - I try hard not to take too much out when mucking out but I cant abide a dark wet bed with sprinkling of dry on top..its all gotta be dry to be left in...I probably use 1 or 2 bales each week topping up existing beds (four inches deep on rubber mats with banks).
I use one bale of large flake shavings (look like bedmax but a larger bale made by a local company) they are £6.95 a bale and last me five days so I use roughly 6 bales a month £41.70 a month
