Just wondered, and do you have to do a test? I'm going to be taking (and hopefully passing!) my driving test later this year, and can't wait to be able to take horse out in the trailer. But I don't know how long you should really have been driving before you start pulling a trailer.

Sorry to inform you but you have to take another test if you passed your test after 1997 for towing

Yes you will have to do a test. Not sure of the in/outs of it as I'm so old, I can drive up to 7.5t on my car license.

As for how long it will take you to learn, that depends what your spacial awareness is like. Some take to towing like a duck to water, and others never get it!!!

One little tip..................Don't try to drive the trailer, you need to drive the towing vehicle as the trailer won't have an engine!!!!

you'll have to take the towing test. it costs £105 and you need professional training to pass it. training for mine now. so far have been on the roads twice and have done some reversing practice - perfectly happy towing it - dont feel i need any more training, but will do to pass the test. reversing seems pretty straight forward to me, but i took to driving v quickly so perhaps just have one of those brains that can learn things like this quickly.

Ok cool, well my mum *claims* that doing lots of riding (especially jumping) helps with spacial awareness. I'm doing a weeks intensive course to pass my driving test, the people claim to guarantee that you will pass your test after the week. Hopefully by next summer I will be able to pull the trailer (will take driving test early Dec. when I turn 17)

I think its weird that now you need to do a test but if you are old like me you can just do it"!!!!!!

Seems a bit unjust...... perhaps its just a way of penalising the young and attractive....... Being a old hag needs to have its compensations!!!

I find towing a trailer really easy and got the hang of it more or less straight away. HOWEVER I can't reverse it. I always try and end up jack knifing it, getting really angry and stressed and getting out and asking someone else to do it. When I go to shows I always make sure I can just drive forwards out of the space. I didn't have to do the test either as I just passed my test before it all changed.

That's not true as far as I know. I trained and passed last year and i remember the instructor saying they quite often get people who have just passed at 17 who do their trailer test immediately as their driving skills are fresh

Ditto with farmers towing stock- farm boys pass and then do trailer test straight away.
