i`m going to a show tomorrow and my class starts at 9. we have never been to this showground before but worked out it will roughly take 20 mins to get there. so my dad said we`ll get up at 7.30 get down the yard by 8, load up and go.

however i think i need more time cos by the time i have entered class, tack up , warm up etc it will be nearly 9. however my dad will not listen to me

Well, surely your horse needs an hour to digest its feed? you also need plenty of time to re-get him ready as hes guarenteed to get dirty etc... If it was me

6.15 get to yard
6.30 feed
7.30 load
7.40 leave home.
8. do entries.
8.15 tack up/ hoof oil etc.
8.30 get on
9: do class

If I'm dressaging I try to get there an hour before so I've got time to unload / run to the toilet / warm up for 1/2 hour / run to the toilet again / chack if I've learnt the right test etc.

Jumping's a guessing game but I'd want to be there prob 1/2 hour min before the anticipated start of the class & would walk the course & then prob warm up for 15 mins. Longer if we've got to do studs or if I hadn't been to the venue before.

she doesnt have any feed in the mornings so no problems there. i keep nagging dad but hes adament that we dont need to get there so early. might just wake him up at 6.30...

My husband won't shift out of bed, resulting in me doing my 1st 1 m 15 cos all the other classes had finished, & in me having a 3 min warmup for countless dr tests... So I used to reset the time on all the clocks & his watch so they were an hour fast...

Bit tricky now cos we've got one of those alarm clocks that sets the time from a radio signal, so I set the alarm for what time I want, then quickly move the clock & hide it, & pretend it's an hour later...

LMAO at catembi - Thats soooo sneaky, but great!!

Im lucky in that my other half is good at getting up (once ive kicked him a couple of times). I like to have at least an hour before the class starts....enough time to get horse and me ready and warm up!

We take 20 minutes to loosen up at a show, 10 minutes to put on tack, a few minutes for entering...if it's enter on the day. I think you need to be there about 45 minutes before your class begins. If you're there in plenty of time if anything goes wrong you can accomodate it & you're ready for your class without rushing.

If you end up rushing you will be tense & that will transfer to your horse. Your Dad's timing isn't too bad but I'd want another 15 minutes....I am a Dad & have the same responsibilities as yours....Good Luck at the show

for showing i like a 30 min warm up time per horse + getting ready time (so getting pony super shiney and getting changed myself) so an extra half hour.

My mum does entries and tacks up whilst im getting changed. so i like a hour for one horse, 1 and a half hours for 2.

I have however done it in 5 mins (drove into the show field as the class before mine was being called in to the final line) Mum unloaded, whilst i got dressed, she then tack the pony up whilst i ran round with lots of show shine and chalk, Oiled his feet and went straight into the ring, no warm up. Still managed to win the class.

I make sure everything is packed and ready to go the day before. If its something my horse must be clean for, then I wash him the night before and stable overnight so basically I get up with an hour and a half to mess about / feed etc. before leaving. If I have to drag a horse in from the field then I allow an extra 45 mins / hour for grooming as well. I always allow plenty of time to get there, more if I dont know where Im going!

I get to an event usually with an hour before my first class, depending on what sort of event it is. If its eventing then I prefer to have an hour and a half so I can wonder about and see where my rings are etc. and plus its usually quite spread out.

Warm-up wise. It depends what it is. I usually allow 30 mins for dressage. 20 mins for SJ and XC (but Im usually getting on with 30 mins to go, to get to the ring etc.). It depends on the horse though. Some days, if its really hot then I may only warm up in 10 minutes simply because one of my horses gets fed up and grumpy if he gets hot!

Ideally I like to get to the show ground, climb on board with my scruffs on, work in and have a wander around the show ground (particularly if it is a lively one). Sometimes working in will only take 10 minutes and sometimes 40). Once I am happy (or too tired to continue) back to the lorry to get changed and get the horse prepared, then hop on board, trot and canter in the collecting ring, then into the class.

At a show, if the horse is likely to be on the lorry without doing a class for more than 2.5 hours, then I will always hop on and give them a walk around to stop them from getting too grumpy! We often take 5 horses to a show and classes could start at 8am and the last class may not be until 4ish, so it is good to get them off the lorry for a wander.

I usually arrive about half an hour before the class. Last show I was sooo late and as I unloaded him I heard the class being called, oops! Quick tack up and jumped on (ripping my jods in the process

). Didn't have time for warm up, just a walk and trot down to the ring from the parking field. I don't do a lot of warming up as he tends to get more and more hyper! Apart from jumping, then I warm up better.
