my mare in the last 2 days has become a coiled spring to ride and a springbok in the field (she is 5 and 16.3 so a bit big to be leaping off all 4 feet all the time) i rode her at the weekend, fine, yesterday she was so full of herself we bucked and squealed going into trot and canter and she had an hr of trot and canter work in the end incl 15m circles which she is not normally balanced enough to do. she was like a coiled spring dancing like a lipazaneer. think she is coming into season and although temp is only 5oc with cold wind i can see some signs of grass growth. She is a bit ribby so not being overfed hard feed. how long does this silly behavior last ? i am going to enter a dressage comp in 21st april and dont want to bother if she will be squealing and bucking. teeth, saddle etc all fine. i am hoping it is just a week or so but god knows what grass she has found as there doesnt look to be much.

Chance would be a fine thing! We're pretty much sub-zero with that biting easterly wind :(

To answer your question, OP.... usually end March through to end May/mid-June.....USUALLY!!!

What spring grass!!!?

Having said that my 2 are total prats atm, but I am putting it down to the LACK of spring grass as they are so bored of just living of hay/haylage.

Our fields aren't even too muddy, but there is just no tempting green stuff left so they are also having to come in at night still which is not helping, and if the temps stay as they are I can't see any significant grass growth until May.

did wonder what spring grass as so bloody cold!!!put it donw to hormonal mare coming into season for first time for this year then.

When you have to ask where the grass is, even though its as cold as it is, there is only one answer... In their bellies.

As for horses with a spring in their step, well, you know, you could just wait til winter again to ride? God forbid horses have personalities these days eh

Because of ther weather & ther paddocks being so wet our have been in quite a bit & when they go out or are ridden they are extremely sparky. Posdsibly they can sense spring is on the way but it won't be spring grass. Until the temperature rises to about 7 or 8 degrees you will find that the gras will not be growing.

Would like to see 'spring grass'... I have 'bare grass mud' concoction!

Saying that, they are finding something, as don't want their hay anymore..

I keep getting comments from people about how my two are coping, not much grass for them etc etc but they have reduced themselves down to eating about 1 section each in 24hrs, so they must be getting something from somewhere!! I cut my grass a few weeks ago and it has definitely grown since then, needs cutting again, so I am using that as a gauge for what the ponies should be getting, whether I see it before it is eaten or not!
