I asked this question yesterday but I didn't get any replies so I hope no-one minds me asking again? Does anyone know how long the spring grass effect lasts as a rule? My pony is very lively at the moment and it is making her even more fun to ride to be honest because she is just fast, not silly. I just wondered, out of curiosity, how long before the grass stops having this effect because my last pony wasn't affected by it and my other two were largely stable kept so I didn't notice their behaviour changing and thus have nothing to gauge it by.

i think it peaks in may then again in september.it has little spurts also depending on the rain and sunshine.
my cob and shetland go out on sparse grazing for no more than 3 hours a day then have 2 slices of hay later between them and a scoop of chaff.
they have put weight on

in the last 2 weeks.
i weight them every week.

Thanks cahill. My mare also has limited grazing because I don't want her to put on weight and I worry about laminitis.

Im afraid it depends on how warm and wet it is. Where I am - in the North - the grass is slowing down as we havent had any rain for a while. Although my chap doesnt really put weight on as he has a lot of TB in him I bring him in during the day and give him hay. The grass is so rich I prefer he has some bulk/fibre too.

I don't know about 'spring fever'! but in terms of the sugars that contribute to Lami it is bright chilly days that are the worst because the plants are photosynthesizing well but growing slowly so all the sugars are stored in the plants and munched by the ponys.
