One of my geldings got kicked (I presume) in the field Weds night/Thurs am, and had a very small puncture hole on shoulder. This is mending now but still nodding in trot, how long do you think he will be unsound for? As it is now 5 days. Am giving him no-bute daily to help and he is out gently walking around field (until he gets picked on again!!!)

poor you - not much luck lately - how are you getting on with your confidence thing - pm me about it a while ago??

A star fracture is, I was always taught, where perhaps a bone has had a blow or kick and the bone has cracked, dented, call it what you will, but it hasn't separated. Somewhere like the point of the shoulder or the thigh are places where it is most likely to happen after a kick or with the shoulder from running into a fence, something like that.
If the injury is on the point of the shoulder and you don't think it is healing, it might be worth getting the vet to have a look or at least advise you over the phone. There again, perhaps your horse is a slow healer, it sometimes happens in which case just give him a bit more time.
Hope you get it sorted.

Pat - thanks for info - my next day off is Thurs so wil check him am and pm and get vet out to have a look at him. Ta for info xx

Don't rule out the possibility of a fracture. Last summer a horse at my yard had a kick injury to the shoulder which left a tiny puncture wound yet the horse was considerably lame. The vet advised "probable" bone damage, which could be a crack, chip or full blown fracture and prescribed 3 months total box rest. Horse is now sound and back in full work.

I would have a chat to your vet, to be on the safe side.
