I started my horse on Haylage 2 weeks ago due to not being able to source any local hay. But it has sent him loopy!!! Spooky and silly. i have now managed to find some hay. How long do you think until i get my lovely calm boy back?

Drastic gut microbe shift can cause behavioural change to *some* haylage - usually the overfermented vinegary smelling stuff. It’ll still be acidic, likely was made too wet.
Also the very sweet smelling, tacky to handle, tetraploid italian ryegrass only haylage, can cause gut microbiome shift and behavioural change.

If haylage not wet and quite dry, more like wrapped hay, i’d suspect some forage mould/microbe growth caused a gut change.

3 days and behaviour should settle, and be back to normal in the amount of time it took to go loopy!

I’ve switched suddenly to different haylages but they’ve usually been well-made haylage…same quality.
I’ve noticed behaviour change with radically different haylages to what theyre already eating, and so try to mix old with new to give the gut a slower introduction.
I understand sometimes that isnt possible if usual supplier runs out and we’re forced to source a different forage.
