Ned's hoof is coming along nicely!

I forgot to ask the vet how long it may take to heal. Presuming I keep it clean etc, how long do you think it might take to heal?

The bit the vet dug out is about about 1/2 cm deep.

Thanks :)

It will grow forward from the back, not up from the bottom, so it's in a good place and should be gone quite soon.

If the infection is completely gone you can pack it. Cotton wool if it will hold it, or Keratex hoof putty or red horse hoof filler.

It really depends - a healthy barefoot hoof in work, maybe four months, a shod horse probably a year ?

It's only a bit out of his toe, looking at the diagram, don't scare the poor girl!!
Once it no longer requires poulticing keep it clean and dry for a few more days, disinfect if you can to harden it off but not before it has fully drained, it should grow back very quickly as long as it is healthy, a couple of weeks and you will be surprised to see it almost gone.

Ah, so it was an abscess after all ! With abscesses i usually wet poultice 3-4 days, dry poultice 2 days make sure its drained then soak a bit of cotton wool in iodine, pack the hole and put some stockholm tar over it
It should grow out quickly if on a good diet two trims and youll never know it was there

I don't know what the previous lameness was, but this one came on really suddenly and the vet pressed on his hoof and gunk came out :( Thankfully it's all out now and it's just healing.

Thanks! Will certainly give that a go :)
