My horse was kicked two weeks ago by one of my other two…thankfully all are barefoot. I didn’t see it happen. It was about 6” above the knee on the outside and initially had a large lump at the point of impact. Then the whole leg was swollen for two days from kick downwards, then gradually resolved. Treated with cold hose, hibiscrub on the kick mark, boswellia. Fine now - kick site is slightly swollen but a fraction of what it was. The rest of the leg is normal. Eating normally, turned out, still not sound on that leg. Is two weeks too soon to expect that? As I didn’t see it happen, I am not sure how hard he was kicked.

Think Tiddlypom is right. Years ago my horse got kicked. It was a small cut to the inside of the thigh which was deep so required stapling. The horse was quite lame, the vet suspected bruising.

I was advised to box rest and then start riding, only when I did the horse was quite lame so I insisted in xraying the area which showed a significant bone chip.

One of mine was kicked on the shoulder and just had a small cut to show for it. He was however very lame but he is a horse who doesn't 'do' discomfort. After 8 weeks he was still lame and the vet was worried that he may have a fracture. X-rays showed bone bruising but fortunately no fractures. It took him just over 12 weeks to come sound.
