How long should I leave her to settle before riding?

I sold one of my horses recently and he went to his new home yesterday. My old mare, who is usually very level headed, watched him leave from her stable. I kept her in overnight as she was settled with hay, food and a big bed, and have just turned her out this morning.

She is intermittently grazing and neighing, but not charging around or having any major histrionics.

I'm just wondering whether to take her out for a wee mooch down the lane to take her mind off things or do you think I should give her a bit longer to settle back down? She's on her own now, and has been kept alone for 3 years prior to me getting my other horse, but she's been kept with him for just over a year. Is it too much to ask of her do you think or do you think a bit of one to one attention might help?

I clicked on this to see what it said thinking of Quinn lol. Take her out and see how she goes like you said might distract her from him not being there :-)

Aww bless her. Quinns been showing off how high his knees go and is determined he will be bigger then any horse he meets lol.
Hopefully someone wise will be along soon ;-)

Hello peeps! SK was going to reply on the other thread but then I saw this!

I would take her out, give her plenty to think about and then go and buy a very cute shetland! (I just want a shetland! so any excuse) or even a miniature horsey? if its small enough you can even split the wormer depending on the weight of Duchess?

Evj - Dirk did the 'I'm the biggest' thing, you suddenly feel you have an 18h horse...it gave me butterflies for a few days!

Hope she settles soon.

Ha ha when Quinn was brought down my friend was offering rusty her shetland out as a field mate. Think she would miss the little bigger too much though.

What's with the Shetland thing???

Just been out for a short hack and she was fab. Neighed once, and that was it. we even had our first (proper, controlled) canter since she came back into work :D:D:D:D:D:D
