Recently started work on a yard a few times per week.

The yard of full liveries consists of about 10-15 stables to do (depending on the day), how long would you say it would take to muck out, hay and water 10-15 large stables? Please give insights for full muck outs and also just skipping out as we don’t fully muck out everyday.

There are also extra jobs, like some horses still need turning out, yard being swept, everything locked up etc. before leaving for the night.

I used to do that number, up to 18 sometimes, and, to include not only skip round, but also extra jobs like a full bed muck out on one or two beds, changing rugs, turning out or putting on the walker, feeding, washing feed dishes, re-making feeds, picking feet, filling nets, sweeping yard and walker, washing waterers, skipping round any left in etc, I would take 8 hours.

Of course, it could be done a lot quicker if jobs were skipped! Everything was left immaculate.

This was 6am to 2pm. I would have time for breakfast and a further cup of tea. Someone else would come along for the evening routine.

Yes what I mentioned is the evening routine, but on the weekend I (plus 1 other) take about 8 hours and do everything you said plus exercising some schoolers, but we usually manage to skip out most stables by the end of the day after the horses go out, so sometimes there’s just a handful left and just topping up hay and water to do for the evening staff, but it seems that when I’m on the evenings there is loads left to be done, and I’ve been told it should take about 2 hours. I end up staying later because I don’t like things left not completed and also don’t want the horses to go without.

When i worked with horses I would allow 10min per stable for muck out. Haynets and water extra. Skipping out would only be 5 min if that.

Thank you, at the moment I think it’s taking me about 5-10 minutes to skip out depending on the horse, and 20-30 minutes to do a full muck out (again depending on the horse and how dirty they are). We only fully muck out once a week though, so obviously a lot of urine has built up underneath and this takes longer to do, we skip out poo daily. I’m conflicted on this, I feel like we should be fully mucking out more regularly as I wouldn’t say the beds are deep littered. I was fully mucking out 4x a week at one point but I was told I was taking too long and should only be skipping out. It also seems that some of the other staff are saying that they’ve done things and haven’t, and I don’t know how to bring this up to the owner as I’m the newest person and don’t want to be rocking the boat.
