As some of you know I turned Major away this winter he's been in a field 24/7 for 7 weeks and now having sold Saph he's coming home on Sunday :)

I was just curious to know how long it will take to get him back to pretty fit? When he went out he was in medium work is say regular schooling, jumping, shows and he'd just been autumn hunting.

He's naturally quite a fit horse, if that makes sense? And is a 6yo thoroughbred in good health, although a bit wet tonight I imagine!!!

We always allow 10 weeks to bring the broodmares to come back into work. But ovbs they have alot longer than 7 weeks in the field! And they have their workload gradually cut down before we stop riding them at about Christmas time. And the 10 weeks includes a good while of roadwork working up to faster work. Seen as he was quite fit before he was turned out, I shouldn't imagine it will take that long really! :)

In bhs exams I seem to remember they worked on a horse having being turned away over winter would take a 12 week programme to bring back to the fitness of a local riding club 1 day event type thing but if its only been 7 weeks it shouldn't be that long I wouldn't suppose xx

When I was bringing my Tb back into work after 2 months box rest we done 2 weeks walking, then 2 weeks troting then started cantering. I done everything in the school when bringing him back into work as it would have been dangerous to hack him ou but with my mare now who loves hacking I hack for 2 weeks then start troting etc. Have fun and congrats on selling the little grey she was lovely :)

I've always believe that it takes around 3 months to bring a horse back to full fitness when its been turned away, however he has not been turned away that long (i'd generally thing of 'being turned away' as a period of at least 6 months) and as it doesn't sound like you roughed him off before turning him away (i.e he was still fit) so i shouldn't think it would take more than a couple of weeks as long as you take it carefully with him and dont strain him too much muscle wise as that is when injuries would occur. My young mare has just been turned away due to her having a face injury and me having a leg op and when i bring her back into work in February she will have had 10 weeks off but i anticipate havig her back to the fitness and level she was by the start of April so 8 weeks (but she had only been broken 6 weeks before being turned away so was not mega fit anyway!!) with the first two weeks of this being just lungeing and longreining :)
