Someone mentioned it can take 6 weeks for the anaesthetic to come out of a horse's system after a GA, but this seems an awfully long time to me.

I was just wondering whether anyone knew?

Errmm, not sure exactly, but if what you have said is true then I would imagine it would be in the system but not have any effect on the horse. When they get gelding they get a dose of short lasting GA and they jump straight back up and are fine to ride the next day as far as I know

My horse is having a op on wed and the plan is to pick him up friday I dont think they would let him go if it was still in the system.Ill ask tommorrow if you like.

All I know is that if you give illegal substance, it should be out within the week for blood testing, so you give them two weeks just to be absolutely sure. Then it's no longer detectable with t a blood test, i.e. at comp if they have had steroids...

I have always a ridden a horse the day after it got doped, not on the day.

Not sure with horses. But it takes 3 weeks for people. Would imagine with horses being bigger and therefore given a larger dose of GA it would take longer. But then again pro rata it is probably the same. Just a thought.....

Cellie, that would be fab if you could

Mandy... perhaps this person is right then, it does take 6 weeks to come out of the system. The reason I am asking is because she needs a final scan on her suspensory, therefore will require IV sedation (I think) and I suspect this is why they are wanting to wait for a further 3 weeks. She has been out of surgery for 5 weeks on Sunday.
