Following Ellie's injuries on Wednesday she is coming along really well - I am very pleased with her. All wounds dry and clean, offside hind still swollen and tender but not hot and no sign of infection.

How long do you think it will be until we can relax and give Ellie the all clear? I know infection can build slowly but she was given antibiotics within hours of the incident and has now finished the AB injections and is onto the powederd AB's for the next 10 days.

I still wake up in the morning feeling sick, dreading going to the field in case I find that she has deteriorated. Ditto going down in the evening.

When can I relax?

I wish I could give an exact time for that..but I'm sure that that's a "how long is a piece of string" reply!!

I'm really glad that Ellie is making good progress and she seems to be recovering well. I would imagine that after the next 10 days you will be able to assess the situation better.

Good luck, and fingers crossed for you and Ellie (((hugs and vibes)))) too x

Pleased she is still mending well - I know the feeling you mean but can't give you a day - that feeling of dread just starts to ebb away as the days go past. As far as the infection is concerned there is still as risk that one may appear - but with each passing day she is on ab's it will recede. Most ab's take 24 hours to start to actively kill bacteria and should have finished them off with in 5 - 7 days. I suspect they have given her a slightly longer course because of her age and because they are bites - more bacteria live in mouths than any where else - that is why it is so important to finish the course (I know you will).

Would suggest that you give her a pro biotic of some kind (if she is not already on one) to make sure the balance of her gut is not too disturbed - antibiotics kill all bacteria good as well as bad (and ignore me if you know all of this already!)

Hugs for you both.
