How long would you give him to settle?

I moved to a livery yard at the end of January, It’s a really lovely place and the people are all lovely. My boy has been a bit of a nightmare to handle (needing a chifney) and pulling faces at people. I had an incident a few weeks ago where when riding out in a group he was kicking out at horses and actually bolted. He has had a bad back which we did discover and has had his back treated and looked at by the vet. However I’ve had more issues with him in the last two months than I’ve had since I bought him. He is getting a little better but I’m finding that he is just not relaxing and I’ve only seen him lie down once and that was for about 20 seconds (I know he does lie down at night). The place I was renting previously he was always lying down.

We have tried putting him out with gelding but he gets bullied and he tries to mount the mares (was gelded late), so he is turned out alone with horses in sight. This has been the way he has been kept the whole time I’ve had him.

He does seem to be settling into his routine but I can help feeling that he is miserable, I called the people on the off chance that the place I rented was still available and it is and they have just been resting the field since I left. They said they would be happy to have me back.

I’m now not sure what to do as I love it at the yard and have been getting loads of help to bring him on, but he isn’t happy. I need to talk to the YO as I had the idea that I could move him back to the old place and hack him over to the livery yard for lessons and schooling.

I’m just worried that now he has been on a livery yard he would not be happy in a field next to others with stable out of site.

I would be loooking at pain issues tbh, you say he's had a bad back? How was this diagonised and what treatment has he had? The bolting, face pulling would make me think of his back. incidently, what was he like at his old yard? How did his routine differ?

Has he gone from a quiet yard to a busy one or visa versa. Outside stable to internal one? To some horses these things make a huge difference.

His bad back was initially caused but his saddle and has not been ridden since until i have a new one fitted, He was examined bu the vet and treated by a vetrenairy physio she was happy with his treatment and he was much better until he tried to mount the mare, then i called the vet out again and it was muscular. I was told to rest him for a few days and give him some bute. The face pulling has been since he arrived he is almost on edge with every little noise etc his routine has not altered that much apart from being around others with lots going on and where he was it was quiet( just him and me), He is very much a one to one horse but loved all the fuss and attention he got in the old place when i invited people round.
