My 6 yr old cob has recently gone lame. He is fine in hand, walk and trot, fine being ridden in walk, but on a loose rein in trot he is definately lame on the off side hind (up high somewhere) he is not dragging his toe so im not convinced its his stifle (phew).

I noticed he was lame Saturday left him till last night (tuesday) he is still lame but not as bad (only marginally better though)

My thoughts were give him a rest till the weekend and if hes not sound by then call out the vet.....HOWEVER someone on the yard look horrified i wasnt on the phone to the emergency vet the second I saw he was lame.

Am I right to leave him? Am I a bad Mum? Wouldnt most leave it a week or so and see?

No - i think you're right to leave it up to a week or so, especially as you say you see some improvement - if he was getting worse then def call the vet. But you wouldn't necessarily call the doctors straight away if you had hurt yourself - only if it didn't get better.

ooh its a tricky one. If I called the vet every time my old TB looked a bit lame, I would have been decalred bankrupt by now!! Also, my vets would have been seriously annoyed with me. Saying that, if its not just 'the usual' I call them pronto with him as I am a paranoid mum due to his age.

However, the native beasts, well. I am not so paranoid about them, they are much more hardy and seem to get over things that would send the TB into the vets for a weeks stay! Somehow I would be more concerned about hind leg lameness but I have no idea why.....

If he is not hopping, getting better and there are no obvious causes (huge swellign, kick mark, would etc) and it was one of my hardy folk, I would probably 'wait and see'.

I too would be waiting ;) If he is showing some signs of improvement and is not hopping lame then i would give him a rest as you say, and then see how he is at the weekend.

If my horse goes lame I call in the vet as the horse is in pain and a vet will be able to diagnose what is wrong with the horse and provide the necessary course of treatment.

I have seen too many instances when a horse has become lame and the vet has not been called in only to find at a later date when the vet was called in that there was something seriously wrong with the horse.

thats the think - he still rolls ok and spazzes out round the feild so im not sure he is in pain till someone rots him while riding - as i said hes not lame when i run him in hand

Last time my horse went lame I phoned the vet, told him which bit had gone wrong he asked why I was calling if a. I knew what was wrong and b. knew how to treat it...

In your case I don't think you are being bad at all. If it goes on longer than a week or if your are worried that it may be more than a simple strain I would call the vet and get it checked just in case. In the mean time rest.

If he's not lame in hand but is slightly when ridden then I'd think maybe back / pelvis? Prob did something stupid while dashing round field and is now a bit sore!

I'd say if it's getting to a week and ridden work is not improving then vet / chiro with vets approval may be required as from what I've experienced backs don't fix themselves like some other injuires (people nor horses!)

May be something completely different but you'd get peace of mind to have it looked at and maybe able to get back riding sooner.

I can't see the problem in resting him a few days to see how he goes. If it's his hind, as long as he hasn't got any heat I think we can rule out feet as he's unshod.
Maybe ask a friend to have a look at him, one who has had experience of lots of lameness.:rolleyes::rolleyes: *ahem* :D

Forgot to ask, did you lunge him, or run him up straight?

No. You're not a bad mum, and tbh I think you're right to give it until the weekend. Especially if there is no obvious sign of what it is (presuming there isn't as you've not mentioned it.), If you didn't call the vet you would most likely just tell you to leave it a few days then call back if he's no better or something, and get slapped with fees for the privalage. (i'll admit we didn't even call the vet when Blue kicked himself a few weeks ago as it didn't need stitches and they'd just say anti-biotics and but which the YO already had)

He's most likely jarred it when charging in the field. Herc did it the other month. He was fine walk and trot, both inhand and out, but wasn't quite right trotting in the school due to the surface.

I HAVE asked a FANTASTIC friend to have a look - shes coming Friday!! *wink wink*

I ran him up infront of Rachel last night straight - no lameness
trotted him ridden on a loose rein - lame :( Rach agrees - hind up high
