I purchased a Roma grazing muzzle yesterday (similar to shires) for my slightly round cob - he is on restricted grazing however this doesn't seem to be enough. He is in work but due to work commitments a the moment its not everyday (soon to change)

I put it on for the first time last night and he didn't object too much (slightly confused with a fair bit of head shaking but settled - have also found that it has the added bonus that he can't nip me when he's being led!). Was amazed to find that it was still on this morning - have removed it, as thought he could do with a break (feel a little mean putting it on but for his benefit). just wondering how long people leave grazing muzzzles on for? And also should the horses nose be touching the end of the muzzle or should there be a gap?
sorry it's long but would appreciate some advice - thanks x

Hi,

my horse wears his whilst out overnight from about 6pm-8am. He has it on quite tight else mahages to get it off but there is a slight gap between the nose and muzzle else i found it rubbed too much! hope that helps.

Flipping heck dm - if your horse bites you as he's led he needs more than a grazing muzzle to explain the rules. The words "elbow", "poke" and "face" spring to mind lol.

I know the muzzle is out on for grazing but saying it helps stop the nipping is hiding teh cause not fixing it..

Nipping you shows he don't respect you and he is the leader..

I don't use a muzzle as I find msot rub over time, plus how frustrating is that for a horse who is a natural grazer.

Instead why not fence off an area and use allow him to eat it right down to nothing and I mean nothing, then regulate his in take with hay. That is what I do.
