How many 'Bales' of Hay in a large round bale?

I am sure I have asked this before, but has anyone every really worked it out?

Motor has hay all year round, due to very restricted grass intake and I am sure I have normally worked out that he gets through at least 2 bales a week .... it is a struggle though, as he is not a 'piggy'

Anyway, this big bale has lasted over 8 weeks now and there is still another week's worth there .....

We have only got large round bales of hay left which are not handy to work with (they dont fit in my hay shed!) So we have been runnning them through the baler & turning them into small bales. So I know the answer is 12!!!

Varies a little as small rectangular bales can be made bigger or smaller but its never been less than 12.

There are benefits of having an OH who is a farmer!
 
It depends on the size of the bale, a five foot round bale can be anything between 15 to 18 small bales depending on how tight they are baled, a four foot bale can be about 10 small bales, a four foot round bale usually lasts me approx three weeks , hope this helps!

... I was hoping a 'Farming connection' would reply .... I was told 'about' 10 bales, but I was sure it had to be more, due to the time it has lasted and I would hate to think that Motor was eating so little

Seeing the reply from Tibby, would that be a 4' or 5' round bale then, as the one I have is as tall as me and I am 5' 3" lol

Thanks Tibby, yes it does help .... seeing Joss's response, I am hoping she will confirm the size of the bale her Farmer OH baled up into little bales
