How many bales of hay...?

Stinky - 15.1 trad cob has about 3 - 4 bales a week and Farra 16.3 clydesdale about 5 (occasionally 6) bales a week. They are in 24 x 7 three days and out 9 - 4 the other four. They are on ad lib hay. If very cold or they have to stay in more, then at least another bale each.

Im still horseyless, but looking around this wonderful yard this weekend, its £4 a bale, but in winter price includes ad lib haylage as the horses have to be in at night; how much extra would you expect to be paying?

im just not sure how much "ad lib" is :) xx

I've never fed haylage so don't know about the cost apart from the fact that it tends to be more.

ad lib basically means that your horse will have free access to haylage and is not restricted as to the amount he/she is given.

Ah right, so in this case do you think i'd only have to pay for hay/haylage in summer?

the livery is £25 per week in summer, not including hay,
and £40 in winter, including adlib hay :)

sorry; i get confused easily :p

thankyou :) xx

Yes, I think you'll only need hay in summer then. It depends on how good your grazing is and if you'll have 24/7 turnout. £15 a week for adlib hay sounds about right - I pay about £14 for hay per week (each bale is £4).

my 16.1 IDx gets through about 3-4bales of hay in summer even with good grazing(he lives in at night all year) but has 2 full haylage nets in winter and more if in all day. but that price for ad lib haylage sounds very good. As for weaning from haylage to hay i never do that but i do mix the hay with haylage to begin with at start of winter just so he gets used to the extra richness my personal preference really and it allows the body to adjust IMO!!

aw - thanks :) xx

Well my lad is usually out all day all year on restricted grass so does not normally need hay in daytime unless it is thick snow or he has to be restricted more if his weight increases. But he is in at night all year round to keep his weight down and he gets 1 third of a bale per night (good sized well packed small bales), so I get through 10 bales per month on that basis.
