i use one small bale a day, with a 17hh poor doer wb and a 15hh good doer cob. If im using a big round bale then it lasts 10 For days and that is not ad lib. For ad lib it lasts 5 days. How long a round bale lasts relies on a few factors, ie what type of baler baled the bale ( how well compacted the hay is) and how greedy your horses are lol

One Small bale? I presume you have grass too then? :)

I use about 30 small bales and 8 rounds a week at the moment, but it is still warm and there is some grass left. Give me a month and I'll be using more than that.

I reserve two cuts of hay off a 10 acre field and about 100 round bales in the spring. Sometimes I use it all, sometimes it sees me through to next harvest. (I feed hay all year round)

my sec a pony- lives out 24/7 unless particularly horrid, so i use very little hay in a week at the min- he gets a haynet tied up whilst he's groomed, and the haynet may last him 2/3 days for the small amount he gets to nibbles each time.

before anyone thinks i starve him, we are very lucky to still have very green fields that seem to still be growing.

All being fed bucket feeds and between three are getting through a small bale of hay a day on average.

It all depends - size + condition of animal, other feed, pasture or lack of it, weather and shelter/local micro climate. Oh and owners opinion.;)

Our spare stable holds 100 small bales (if tightly packed), so that's how many I order. Delilah has a third of a bale in the morning and in the evening, plus half a scoop of nuts and grass.

Mollie (14.2 good doer) eats about 4 small bales a week. Almost no grass now, and very little hard food (just enough to put her magnesium in :)). The hay is made on site so I just buy a couple of bales every few days.

I store approximately 300 small bales (45-55 lbs) grass and grass/alfalfa hay in my hay barn. This is more than enough to last a year for my two horses.

My horses get through about a bale/day in the winter and less than that for the rest of the year.

Winters here last for many months and last year winter came early and I used up hay very quickly from mid-November onwards.

I've over-bought this year by about 100 bales because I hate that feeling in the middle of January when I think I'm running low on hay. It means that I am usually able to donate some hay in spring to someone locally who is in desperate need of it.

I still have fuzzies strip grazing their winter paddock during the day (loads in there as rested since end Jan!) and big fuzzy - 15.2 solid good-doer is on 2 sections overnight in stable. Little fuzzy (12.2 very-good-doer) is on 1/3rd a section overnight in tiny paddock with field shelter.

Had 70 bales delivered in the summer, had also 20 left from last winter.
Can get 200 in the haybarn if pushed, tho reckoned that we'd need 80 - 100 till spring for the 2 of them.

Have used 6 bales in total so far during November & the last week of October.

Due to grass situation, am not expecting to hay in the daytime till xmas, unless weather gets like it was this time last year & they cant find the grass!

This time last year was using 4-5 bales a week between them but had lots of snow.

well i put just under 2000 small bales in the barn in july, and also secured another 1000 (in the farmers barn) also in july. paid for the 2000 already in , and fixed a price incl delivery for the rest. i allow a min of half a bale per day per horse minimum, but only started on the hay last week so probably wont need the extra this winter depending on weather. if this is the case i let the farmer know early jan and he can sell it on at a much bigger price. securing hay at agreed price in july is more cost effective.

yep about one a week haha! he gets about 2 sections a night, because he is on a diet.
another q, is it worth buying one of the bigg bales of hay? people at my yard are ordering a few big bales, and at the mo i have some small bales left. the big bales should last me 1-2 months, is it really worth it?

Chico goes through about 1 to 1 1/2 small bales per week.

He still has grass and get an evening hard feed.

He is maintaining condition on this so i'm not going to bump the quantity up until i feel her really needs it.

16.1 not-terribly-good-doer Gelderlander mare gets through a third of a bale a day at the moment. So just over 2 bales a week. The field is green and the grass growing like stink so I expect I'll be going through 3 bales or more when there's no grass left.

Have you weighed what you are giving?

Only asking (not being rude!) as its unusual to have 14 odd slices to most small bales.

My current bales have approx 8 slices & each slice is around 5-6lb in weight, which works out right as the bales are approx 40 - 45lb each in weight

I feed 2 slices a night and go though 1 1/2 bales a week so I'm shocked somebody has large enough bales to be able to only go through the 1bale

I'm surprised at how little hay you all feed in the UK. Even though there may still be grass in the fields, it's nutritional content will be little to none.

Right now I am feeding 1.5% of bodyweight in hay to each horse and that will increase to 2% as it gets colder.

I do think it's important to weigh the hay as slices/flakes can vary by several lbs.

But it is also vital to ensure your horse is the correct weight. I was surprised, based on the 2.5% body weight theory, my gelding should be eating approx 13kg a day. He gets approx 6-8kg hay overnight and about 500g fibre cubes with 8-9 hours turnout daily. He is maintaining his weight so clearly getting enough to keep him shiny, happy and healthy :)

15.3/16hh good doer wb gets 8lb a night. I can get about seven nets out of one bale, so one of my bales weights 56lb-ish they are really big standard bales that we make at home not bales made to sell. He also get a scoop of hifi good doer or lite twice a day and good rough grazing 7am till 5pm. He is very fit at the min and holding his weight well.
