I have an old Disco for towing and have been driving my Mum's old car to work..Unfortunately her car has just gone bang. I'm wondering what to do now, whether to use my Disco everyday or to consider buying another cheap old car but having 2 cheap old cars seems a bit much? I'm not sure what to do really! I don't want to ruin the old Disco by driving it all the time. Just wondered what everyone else did?..

I just have one car for towing and commuting - it is a bit of a beast for driving to work everyday but is not too expensive on fuel - so more cost effective for me just to have the one!

We have 3 cars between 3 of us and swap about as needed, they are a rover diesel, a rover petrol and a disco, so we just use what we need, it works well for us and means we dpn't have to do long non towing journeys in the disco.

One.

GMC 4.6l V8 truck thingy, commutes 90 miles a day and hauls everything at home too. Thirsty beast, but gas is still cheap compared to UK prices. We are permanently intending to get a run around but just never get around to it, in winter when there are 2' high drifts on the back roads a little car just wouldn't cut it.

I have two cars, an old Isuzu Trooper for towing and a Honda Civic Hybrid.

However, the Honda is a company car but it works out cheap income tax wise because it's a hybrid - I choose to do this instead of having a car allowance and buying a newer 4WD.

I suppose it depends on how many miles you do and/or if you could afford a newer but more economical 4WD?

Currently we've got a bit carried away. My elderly Audi - just turned that over to husband though; daughter's elderly Golf - which will be mine whilst she's at Uni; husband's not quite so elderly but still fairly geriatric Skoda Octavia estate - our ex-towing car but not up to towing 200 gallons of water or 2 tonnes of poo and is currently mine but will be sold soon; my recent indulgence, an elderly heavy duty Landrover for the big towing - it now has a collection of trailers to justify its purchase

Then we have the ancient Transit horsebox which is waiting for me to organise someone to weld it and and MOT it so I can sell its valuable number plate and my lovely Betsy lorry who is fairly old (15 years!) but but that doesn't matter as I've wanted one like her since I was 7

I have a lorry 20 mpg and a 50+ mpg diesel car I dont see the point of a 4x4 just for towing !but I think it realy depends on how many miles you do a week if its only a 100 ish then I would say one car to use all the time would be cheapest I sometimes do 600 +miles a week so economy is paramount you need to do your sums...

Guess it all depends how much mileage you do really -in our house between 3 of us there is a Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.8 V8 petrol thats only ever used for towing, 2 diesel estates for carting mutleys about and a youthful astra diesel that I use for work coz I have to do farm inspections and do at least a 1000 miles a month just for work. Although my dads always been one for running stuff into the ground to apparently make them "not owe you anything" - he has some wierd engineery type calculation that works out how much in the cars lifetime its cost him, if its around 2p/mile that you've covered then thats good going!!

I have a pajero for towing that i only use to get to the field over dirt tracks and to tow with. I use an economical diesel car for getting to work but more often than not I try and lift share so i don't drive to work every day

I just have a golf tdi - does between 50-60mg! However looking to get a 4x4 eventually... I do 30 miles a day commute. Not looking forward to the swap, but I can't afford to run a lorry as well!

Hubby has a 4x4 VW van for work.Have a "family", a Kia sportage( both of which would tow but OH won't let me put a tow bar on

), I have a Vauxhall Agila which costs juts £35 a year in road tax, and does almost 50mpg, to run about in and then I also have a wonderful 3.5t horsebox cos meany won't let me tow with the other 2 suitable vehicles....

I just have one car full stop, a mondeo, if that breaks I am stuffed and have to use public transport! OH has a motorbike, I have been on it once and its not really for me, i get my thrills riding my horse!
Anyway, I digress, if you can afford to buy and run another cheap spare then why not...

we have 3.a silly beetle for work.oh peugout estate for work and a 4x4 for towing weekend driving etc.both drive a lot for work so not viable to use big car all week

20 year old Fiat Panda 4x4 for going to yard with. Smart Roadster for work. Thinking of a tow car as well, would like an Isuzu Trooper but would need to sell one as 3 cars is a bit excessive ! but cannot decide which one.
