How many classes do you go up in the year? Do you start at BN and then progress throughout the year or stay in the BN with the odd 90cm class or Discovery?
Just curious.
Do you have an aim at the beginning of the season to go up, or do you stay within your comfort zone?
Thanks

I just play it by ear tbh....i might actually come down a class or two in the year if confidence drops. This past year i have jumped everything from 90cms to 1.20m with Bo. Trike will probably stick around 90cm and 1m for the rest of his life....unless a miracle occurs

BTW....BN IS 90cms

I do try and progress but sometimes I dont. I registered this time last year and I have done a couple of discoverys. I'm now beginning to do them at every show whereas before Bailey and I wern't ready (he was still green and I couldn't see strides so 1 metre course could have messed his confidence)

By the time I sell him hopefully we'll be jumping some newcommers

(Selling him before Sept)

Depends...have had a horse go from discovery in april to 1.30s in september (happy days!) , but some take forever and spend the whole season going in the same classes. I dont really mind whether they whizz up the heights or not so long as they're doing well at what they're jumping. And winning stuff!

I know they'll get to where I want them in the end, and I'm in no rush (actually I dont think I've ever said a truer word!!)

Rushing is so not my thing!

my first horse went from british novice to foxhunters and 1.25's in a year, and yet i know my current horse will probably be 2years before she jumps her first foxhunter and i personally think shes a better horse.

I always set myself aims, but im not too bothered if they need longer to develop etc

I think it depends on the horse and rider. I personally won't move up a level until I am doing consistently well at the current level - This doesn't necessarily mean winning but jumping double clears regularly if you do this success soon follows!. I also try to move up before I have to, before I'm out of a class, so that if it does all go wrong I can always step back a level - although now there are so many small opens available it doesn't really matter.

As for aiming to go up within a season this depends on the horse. I have a 14yo Grade A - I never push him out of his comfort zone and he is consistently winning/ placed up to 1.10, although he would jump round a bigger track he wouldn't be competitve and would not really enjoy it - I don't see the point of pushing it when we have fun and do well in smaller classes.

I then have a Grade C who has more scope. At the moment he is jumping double clear in foxhunters and hopefully we will move up to 1.25s soon. Its Horses for Courses really.
