Just trying to gauge what is acceptable in terms of km'age (!)

In my pursuit for a new lorry, i have come across some lovely ones that have done 500k km or 600k km, which to me is just too high.

I have an idea of what my acceptable upper limit is, but am very interested in other people's opinions.

Am mainly interested in 7.5ton or HGV amounts, but dont hold back if you have 3.5ton

3.5 tonne 1979 Transit has done 68,000 (genuine) miles
7.5 tonne 1978 Leyland has done 90,000 miles according to clock BUT a) speedo is not accurate and b) clock only reads to 99,999m so goodness knows how many times she's been round it.

I 300km isnt that high on a k reg, lorries do miles and miles, thats what they are built for (well thats what i was told by the guy we bought our first lorry off!)

Just to add, mines an 'R' reg.

Cool. I think 300k is my upper limit. Found a nice one that am going to see on Thurs that has done about that many. Also going to see a J reg cargo that has only done 70k km.

The 600k one i mentioned is lovely, but on an E reg and so many miles/km!!

Last speedo read 455k when it was changed as it had stopped working - old V reg Bedford TL and engine still runs perfectly.

Know a haulage contactor who still has his G plated Artic with 575k on it.

Lorries designed to cover at least 500k during their lifetime

Miller, thats what I was going to say, an AA man once told me any decent sized diesel engine worth its salt should easily cover half a million miles. Having said that my B reg bedford TL has only done 170,000 miles, and got masses of old plating certs to back that up - my friend's B reg bedford 3.5t has only done about 15,000 and that is backed up by ALL the old MOT certificates! They've both been horseboxes for donkeys years though which keeps the mileage down.

350,000 KMs on a F reg Ford Cargo 7.5T - by the colouring I think it might have been a Royal mail truck at some time in the past

Does that mean we can now call you Postman Pat?

304000kms on a "w" plate...year 2000...MAN

nothing for a lorry of that make and age
as long as it's regularly serviced
7.5T

The kms really are not too much of an issue for that year of registration as long as the vehicle has been very well maintained and serviced regularly and to be fair i would be very dubious about buying a chassis / horsebox with mega low miles which would indicate to me either not been properly utilised or has had a tacho change which is pretty common.

We dont tend to buy chsssis with over 200k on the clock or older than 2003 reg, due to saleability factor for the type of horseboxes we build and the market sector we sell to, but still in saying that all the chassis we purchase are fully serviced by the manufacturer before delivery and come with full history.

The engine is designed to do well in excess of 900K as they are supposed to on the road nearly 24hrs a day working!

You could - but it has a red box and a swirly white design on the sides - has been decribed as a Coca Cola delivery vehicle

We sold our 1984 Ford Cargo 7.5T cab & chassis last year with a genuine 64,000kms on the clock! However the cab was disintegrating around it!!

Now have a 1998 MAN 7.5T with 250,000kms as it was previously owned by a transport firm but this usually means they have been well serviced. And as has been said already these truck engines are built to run and run and run!!
