Haven't joined this year as I don't like to travel too far to a ODE and what with Wolverhampton not running again and Rodbaston only having October possibly (still TBC) that only leaves me Stafford and Eland Lodge that I want to travel to.
So would you try to get in on these on a day ticket? I always FJ at Stafford for one day each time but have never helped out at Eland.

Haven't in the past as you definitely never use to get in at the early comps, once the ground got hard you could. This year though we have a limited window so not sure we can warrant the costs.

i did my first season then i got balotted out of my fav event :(
i did managed to blag/beg/plead my way off the wait list but that was that and i paid full subs for the rest of the year ,so depends on how gutted you would be if you got balloted and of course how popular your local events get

on t'other side of coin i paid full subs last year for above reason and horse got injured after only 2 events and is still on side lines and only got about £25 back :(

so pro's and con's either way really

I affiliated last year only to discover that I could have got into any of the BE90 events I did on a ticket. Things weren't plain sailing for various reasons and this year I intend to compete on a ticket. I'm lucky as we also have an unaffiliated up to pre novice running at tweseldown and mattingley. It is just not financially viable for me to affiliate with BE until I want to compete at Novice or above.

I did a BE80T on a ticket last spring, I would probably have had a crack at our local 90 if the ground hadn't gone so hard, as it was I had a very quiet summer as I wanted a sound horse!

Did fence judge at said local event, and we could hear the horses galloping about 200 yards away - no way would I have run on that!

Ground, horse and balloting permitting I may well have a crack at a 90 or 2 this year.

I competed at Eland, Stafford and Buckminster on a ticket last year and had no problems although I did do the open classes which are not always as popular. Still not made up my mind whether to join or run on just tickets again this year, need to reassess the financial situation :(

i don't think that many events that i did balloted last year at all...i was entering really late for some of them...i think early ones or super popular ones (e.g. Somerford) still will though...if you volunteer at stafford then you'll get in on a ticket i would assume and then i would have thought you'd be ok for eland as its a bit later in the year. have you not thought about coming up to cheshire? there are a few events and not that far? :)

I did four last year on a ticket - beckwithshaw, richmond, bishop burton and askham bryan and got into all of them no bother (I believe richmond and askham are usually oversubscribed in particular) so I think its a sign of the times that many events arent balloting now as theres a lot less money about!

We are registering for this season (as horse has proved its worth doing) but wouldnt hesitate to go on tickets again in the future if we had to as the whole process if very easy!

good luck!

I evented on a ticket last year with no problems. I only did Brooksby and Shelford though! I am ding the same again this year, as can't afford to affiliate really. May do a half season, but there is enough unaff (Shelford, Stafford, Oasby, Eland) for it not to be the end of the world if I didn't get into the BE events. I would like to do somerford though!!

I competed on a day ticket at Eland in July and my sister did Brooksby on a ticket too. We are going to register one horse this year but I would be happy to continue on tickets if I was only going to do one or two events.

I did 2 on a ticket last year and will do the same this year. You can do up to 4 and as I like doing other things like BD, SJ and showing this is enough for us. Also there is the southern eventing unaff champs which run at Twesledown, Mattingly and Borde Hill so will do those as well! That's 7 events in total, more than one a month so perfect!

somerford is so lush i love it! even nicer now they have the arenas for the SJ. i was gutted that i was going to be missing it this year (am away getting married in august) so very pleased to see they are having a march event too :D

I've done Stafford BE90 on a ticket without problems. If you're not doing many events it saves you a fortune.

What about Somerford? Thats within travelling distance from you isn't it? That said, I didn't even get in there when I used my superballot one year!

I did a few on a ticket last year & quite a few un/aff which ran over same course! Osberton, Oasby, Shelford all un/aff then Shelford 2, Winkburn & Norton Disney affiliated. Only one I got balloted was Oasby 2, but I did leave it quite late to enter! This year I'm still undecided........ May do the same again!

Thanks guys think I will save some pennies then and go for day tickets :D
Had always thought Somerford was a tough XC course and that's where my nerves sometimes let me down, though Pidge is more than capable
Which ones are worth doing in Cheshire DB as I'm too old to travel too far what with FT job, house etc :p

somerford isn't as beefy as it used to be i don't think- although they don't have a 90 in the summer so you'd have to be ready to go in march! Bradwall is nice and straightforward although i do think often ballot. Kelsall is lovely. quite up to height but always rides nicely :)

wouldn't bother with bold heath or malpas personally :)

A few years ago I only did day tickets for one season, as knew my old horse was probably doing his last season, as he had been diagnosed as having bone spavin (not that you could tell, still happy to jump and no-one believed me that he had arthritis!). So would not run on hard ground. Unfortunately we got ballotted a few times which was very frustrating. But I have noticed in the last few years ballotting is not happening nearly so much (probably there is a drop in membership as is soooo expensive, especially at lower levels, and more events to choose from).

I'm hoping to do the BE events I want to do this year, on a ticket. I'm lucky to have quite a few unaff ODEs within easy striking distance (ALW, Keysoe, Solihull and hopefully Bury Farm). I want to do Carlton BE and perhaps Ely, or ALW BE but it's not worth affiliating for 3 events and I'll cope if I get balloted. I may change my mind if things start going really well though :p

My plan (famous last words ;)) is to do a few events in the first part of the season on a ticket. If pony takes to it I will then become a full member myself & buy a part season membership for him.
Hopefully then this means I'm saving the expense of membership until later on when my horses are living out & costing me a LOT less money :D

Eland are the BEST at catering and look after the start team :-) and fence judges very well. Don't be worried about FJ'ing there if you need to to get through the ballot thingy .
