How many of you lug water out to the fields?

So...I've decided to move to a lovely farm livery, and the only con on my list is the fact that the huge approx 8 acre field only has one trough - and the natural shelter is all up the other end, which is where I currently have them taped in a couple of acres, hence the need for water lugging - anyone else do this?

I do. My lo does have a trough in place - and there are hosepipes to fill it up with - but I find that it is far quicker to fill a bucket and lug it down to the field than it is to get the long hosepipe. I also like the fact that this means my lo gets fresh water everyday, rather than the horrible green water that sits in the troughs! I'm the only one on my yard to do this ... but I just think it's nicer. Probably helps that I've only got a mini shettie, so the bucket isn't too big!

My horses are currently out on their summer grazing which is a good 5 min walk up our drive way. I have to lug water up there everyday in containers on a wheelbarrow. Good excercise!

Would it not be possible for you to get yourself a lot of hose and attach until it goes at least half way - that will give you more options. Massive black bins will hold enough water for a few days in summer - in winter they may crack.

That is if your tap isn't hidden all the way round the back of your yard anyway.

We have a hose that runs a fair distance to our summer water bins - You may need several hoses but you can usually get some second hand on ebay - you just need many connectors. It may be worth investing if you intend on staying there a while.

Otherwise - lots of people swear by those water carriers for wheelbarrows...

Love it that your little gremlin is your LO (little one?). So cute! Lucky pony :)

Yes we have to in the winter when we move them to our middle field. I can get 3X25ltr containers in a two wheeled barrow. Luckily in the summer we open up our bottom fields with a river running through it......luxury.

I invested in a 250 gallon road towable bowser after realising that I was carrying 25 gallons a day in summer and occasionally needed to make two trips. Now I fill at home and then drive it up to the field where it is attached to water troughs with ballcocks in so the troughs fill automatically. Life is far simpler now:D

Thanks guys, I'm not the only one then! Think I could run a pipe off the current trough. I'm half filling a big water butt (as that's all I cam carry) from the yard hose atm, driving it down the road parallel to the field and then going through the gate, so its not too bad. Like I said, its the only con of the place!
Wheelie bin is a good idea!

We've done it for the past 2 years after all the troughs in all the fields seemed to have been shut off, long, complicated story, upshot is, better the horses have water! It's not that hard really, we get the water from the stables put it into big containers, put them onto a hand card and wheel out to their buckets which are by the gate.

I move DFP's paddock around, so he just has a trug for water. I use a H2Go bag in a metal wheelbarrow (to stop it slipping) and its so so easy. Even going uphill and over bumpy ground. :)

Yes I do. My yard has so many individual paddocks that quite alot of us have to, not everyone mind. There are a few fields where there are herds kept together and they have troughs.
I fairly recently got a large blue water butt and cut it down a bit, its great, it holds about 5 x 25litre containers which is great, so 125litres approx. Its hard work but fortunately my paddock isn't miles and miles away from the yard, but its far enough! The yard is fab other than this, would love a trough though :)

Another who uses bags, great invention. There is no way I could lift and empty a large container. Not sure how I will manage going through mud though, might have to move the buckets close to the fence so I can fill from the other side.

^^^ I do have another trough so thinking about running it off the present one - but think I'll need about 200m! Anyone know the cost of the water piping?

I thought we were alone.... Here at no facilities.com

No water, electric, plenty of mud, sinking track so little parking but decent fencing and lovely land. Old rice box and two ibc containers. Water pipes laid by Severn trent taking forever to hook us up. Miracle when it happens

We dont have water at all at this field, if its not been raining we have to take it from home. When it rains the water runs off the roof of the shelter, but otherwise we take it with us.

In the winter, when it's cold, the water in the stables freeze, so i have to lug it from the house, its a pain but i have a recycling bin(wheelie bin) that i 2/3's fill and wheel it down to the stables. It takes the hard work out of it, although it's a pain, when you are trying to balance it on a huge sheet of ice. A field should be a breeze!!!!
