walk your dog along a road without a leash on? I don't mean a quiet little lane but a proper busy road. I live very near teh A38 and to get to Yellow Dog's fave walk of the moment I have to cross it and walk along it for a few moments. The amount of people who walk their dogs along without leads has really shocked me

Most of them dont even appear to be well behaved either - twice this morning I saw dogs dash into the road

My dogs are not allowed out of the mobile home without a lead on

Seriously, I would never ever walk them off the lead anywhere near a road, they are too quick to dash off after something...

I don't walk our dogs on the road very much as we live on a farm, so we take to the fields. But if I do, the roads where we are are pretty quiet, the slightly busier one we have to go along, I always keep them on leads, but once I turn up the quiet little road (suppose what you may call a quiet country lane

). I do let them off, they are all very obedient.

I don't let mine off anywhere where I can't see around the corner, anywhere that isn't secure (boundary fences etc) or anywhere where I am likely to bump into other people, dogs, livestock etc.
B recalls, Bella is a bit iffy as she will bolt for home if she feels scared or is spooked by something and I find people don't appreciate GSDs bombing up to them - it is a courtesy thing

We met a couple on the beach once with an OES and they hadn't even a lead WITH them.
They had to drag the poor thing along by the scruff of the neck because I had to yell at them three times to call their dog and keep it away from mine (B was having dog aggression issues at the time)
Who does that???!!!!

We don't have the main roads that you are describing, but just small lanes. However I do walk both dogs down to the yard (along the lane) every morning and I take them both riding with me.

They are both trained that as soon as they hear a car - or I shout "Car" they both go and sit on the verge until it has passed and as they are working dogs they are whistled trained too.

I know that where we live its a bit of an exception but I absolutely cringe when I see people walking their dogs on roads, sometimes with a long lead so they are meandering about, sometimes on the outside of the walker in the path of the traffic and my biggest bugbear - is the evening dog walkers who don't wear high viz!

Luckily I have never seen a person walk their dog without a lead on a busy road.

Absolutely not - even though her recall is excellent, it only takes a second for her to jump out into the road at just the wrong moment.

Plus she hasn't got much road sense (when she was a puppy she used to jump in front of cars and try to "play" with them by biting their front tyres!). The only road we walk along off-lead is the one I live on, which is in a very quiet housing estate where there are so few cars that any that do come along can be heard from a mile off.

I dont let my dog off the lead unless its an open field with no one in.
He was attacked by a staffy (might be exaggerating a little - he was growled at, snarled at, bitten and puled around on rather viciously but no blood. The staffy's owner carried on his text while i'm shouting at him to grab his dog and get it on a lead) and he's getting to an age where i just worry about him not being able to stand up for himself. We have to walk over a dual carrisgeway on one of you walks but they installed traffic lights about 3years ago so all good

Another reason is my dad walks without a lead but Bugs would dare to anything with him, anyway, it was dark and the dog ran out after something and hit the side of the car. The owner was fine (only going about 5mph) but the dig was pretty shook up and hid in the grass for abit.

I just wouldnt risk it, i'd hate myself if anything happened
