wake you up at 3am crying the place down as the obviously need to do a number 2 the size of an HGV (or sounds like it by the noise they are making!) and when you let them out they go straight to their noisiest squeeky toy and want to play instead?!!!

Drives me insane cos then I cant catch the bugger in my nighty and wellies as he is bolting round the garden with his ball! Last night I was tempted to go in and close the door on him and go back to bed

take all the toys out of the garden before you go to bed then when he does it again leave him out there, at least for a while, little sod might no think its as much fun then!!

does he do it a lot??

about 2-3 times a week. It is a phase though and it comes and goes. He is a 15 month old gordon setter so that will explain a lot!

If he doesnt want to play he will sit down bolt upright with his back to you and not move. stubborn little minx!!!!

sounds like fun!! haha!!!!!!

we put our dogs out for at least half an hour of play before they go to sleep so they go straight through when they're young, maybe he isnt worn out enough!?!

maybe something else is disturbing him, its quite unusual for dogs to wake up in the night for no reason??

lots of animal noises keep him awake I think. He is funny as he get over tires and starts going doo lally (running round and round in circles and dragging himself all over the floor) about 9pm every night and when I put him in his cage he is out like a light. upside down usually!

sounds mean but i wouldnt put him to bed till as late as you can when he's got you up the night before, we've got 7 puppies at the mo and if you let them sleep before 10 you wake to the dawn chorous at 6!!!!!

the later we can keep them up the longer lie in we have!!!!!

That must be really annoying!!!!

We've got a 12 month old pointer - she's a maniac most of the time but will sleep for england when she's in bed!

What kind of dog is he and where does he sleep?

If he does want to go out put him on an extendable lead, if he needs to go he can but if he's just messing about you can reel him in again and put him back to bed. He'll soon realise there's no fun to be had - and it will save you chasing him round the garden in your nighty!

My eight month old puppy went through a phase of this. Drove me nuts standing there in my nightie shivering with her belting around the garden at 3 am. I was so cross. After a few nights of being taken for an idiot I decided to show her that it was not the thing to do. I would go down when she started (if she was lying down and looking relaxed) I would tap loudly on the top of her cage and say "NO" very firmly. Straight back out and shut the door and wait until she started again and then back straight in again to do the same thing. 2 nights and that was that!! I realised that she is more than capable of hanging on through the whole night because she did not do it every night - like you - 2-3 times per week. Give it a go - can't do any harm!! Good luck.

You might have had a laugh if you saw me creeping about at 3.00 am the other morning, looking for my Jack Russell who I could hear (as could the rest of the village, I've no doubt). He'd obviously got out of the garden and was up the road somewhere (fortunately a quiet country lane). I found him by following the sound. He'd dug a hedgehog out of somewhere and was desperately trying to unroll it and make it play. I'm glad to say, not one car passed us... I'm not a pretty sight at that time, in my dressing gown.
