Hi Just wondering how you cope with it.
I have a bad back and have a lot of pain the day after riding.
My bad back was caused by falling down the stair and wear and tear over the years.
I am only coming back into riding now and am feeling really down about the pain thing.

I have a bad back (landed on bottom of back/bottom when I fell off a few weeks ago) but I just grit my teeth and put up with the pain.

Sorry for not being much help

I used to have a bad back after riding. I would realy recomend pilates, yoga or something similar to strengthen your core muscles (back and abdominals). It will help your riding and make your back stonger and less painful. Riding correctly shouldn't actualy hurt your back, its falls or spooking etc that tends to cause wrenching. Also all the physical manual work that goes along side horse owning.

Yes, I came off my horse when I was 16 and landed on a load of poles. When I did it I couldn't get out of bed for 6 weeks. Luckily it was the day after my A level. Still bothers me now, but when it flares up I see a Chiropractor and he sorts me out and it will last a few months.

Me too

broke mine in 1998 and then ruptured discs in 1999. And that was on top of the damaged caused by a car crash 19 years ago and 20 odd years of horses!!!!

I have regular treatement and it helps. Best treatment I found was Bowen followed by Osteopath. And now my back only seems to ache when sitting in an upright chair, being on horses actually is great for the back - my neurosurgeon said - it make you align everything correctly - but falling off and tensing up is really bad. So a nice relaxed ride in a really good seat and you back is fine. No one has yet said that mucking out, carrying bales and feed and poo is good for the back!

Hurt by back falling off jumping yesterday. I landed on the bottom of it, it annoyed an old injury of when I fell off in March 06 (nastier fall). Made an appointment for the doctor and am consideing going to a psyotherapist. Is it worth it?. I`m worried in late years it is just going to get worse.

I used to have awful back pain for about 5-6years - couldn't lie down for long without me getting stuck in that position. Mine was from a car accident when I was 17. I couldn't walk well for a few weeks afterwards or run for about a year but I found that swimming helped. Now I don't have as much pain - then again I don't find time to lie down!

I have landed on my back one too many times! (always end up on it!) but since we got automatic drinkers installed, no more problems!

Yes, I have problem with my sacro-iliac joints and have done for years. Been to my physio again today as back has been hurting for last fortnight and felt like it was going to "go" at any moment and he treated me with accupuncture (dry needling) and physio. He is very good and I don't mind the 3 hour round trip to get to him. Nothing else has worked for me - tried Chiropractic/Osteopathy/other physio/ultrasound etc.

I have sciatica after two pregnancies, and a few injuries over the years. Can't do too much strenuous riding. Wintecs hurt my back, but funnily enough I can ride in a western saddle no probs.

I had a fall off a green horse I should NOT have even been riding over 4 years ago and nearly killed myself (almost broke my back but was lucky). I still get problems every day now so I can sympathise. I have to wear a back support when I ride just to make is painless when I actually ride. I'm fine as long as my back is held together!!

I'm 18 by the way!

Oh yes, bulging discs in my neck after a car crash in 1999 that cause upper back pain, and lower back pain from a selection of falls and also broke my hip a couple of years ago (another fall).
The pain is constant, some days less than others. I can cope with riding - getting on is the biggest challenge..and any spooking or jinking has potential to cause a LOT of pain, so I tend to just pootle around on horses i believe to be quiet.

Diazapam is useful on the really bad days!

ME!! and im only 14

i did it a few years back when i fell off riding. some days its okay, but sometimes i twist round awkwardly and it triggers it and kills. was speaking to mum about it and she said maybe shes gunna take me to the doctors about it. i'd like to get one of them back support things as i've heard they help alot with back pain as it stops the back bending awkwardly quite alot.

anybody know how much they are??

Broke my neck when I was 13... horse rolled ontop of me when we were jumping! Have had bad back for 15 years BUT it is important to improve your core stability... ie. abs and back muscles.. yoga as suggested is good, together with exercises to improve muscle tone in the back and stomach... lots of bearing down when riding!!!!

It depends whether the back pain is caused through muscular problems or more spinal/disc based. I am not qualified but most back problems are actually caused by the surrounding tissues and muscles pulling the spine out of place and this can be easily fixed...believe me.
I won't bore people but I suffered for years from lower back pain and cronic hip pain to the point where I could barely walk 10 steps without my right hip cracking and causing me severe pain. I reluctantly booked myself in to an acupunturist when things got worse when I started riding again. I had 6 sessions of accupuncture & physio...yes it hurt! But I have been completely and utterly pain free for over a year since...and that is doing endurance riding every weekend last summer and autumn!
I had a relapse when I came off my horse a while back...went straight back and was fine again after 2 sessions.
I would really recommend it...not a cure for everything...but most problems can be fixed by a properly qualified practioner. The chap I go to despairs at how long people suffer before doing something about it...and yet we think nothing of calling the vet, chiros, back people etc out at the drop of a hat for our neddies!!!!
Also bear in mind that these back problems could also be affecting your riding...and therefore, your horse!

I had a crashing fall from a horse 18 years ago and had major spinal surgery. Ive suffered ever since and for the last few years I have been fighting them off (them being the consultants who want to operate on me again... over my dead rotting body I say).

I don't know many people with horses who haven't had a bad back at one time or another. Some people are just lucky I guess!

i'm another sufferer of back pain.Mine was from a car accident 4 months ago and I'm still in pain.I have physio twice a week and am on tramadol currently awaiting an MRI scan for possible disc damage so not allowed to ride or do anything with horses at all yet.I'm looking forwards to being able to get back on my horse and do the things I used to do.I have to say so far the tramadol has been fantastic and really has made a difference to my pain levels and with no side effects at all which is great. What pain killers do you use for your back?I started off with just cocodamol that the hospital supplied me with, but found it did nothing.so on the advice of my gp I took cocodamol and ibuprofen 2 hrs apart which although more effective than the cocodamol alone still wasn't strong enough to do more than take the edge off the pain.I went back to my gp who referred me for the MRI and gave me tramadol.

I had a couple of prolapsed discs about 10 years ago - never did anything about it as felt I didn't have the time to take off to have it surgically fixed......what a bad move! I kick myself frequently nowadays as the darned back has never gone back to how it used to be.

I think when you have something like this, you just get used to having it with you constantly so it really isn't such a big deal; well not for me. Some days it does ache a lot so on those days I just take things easy, but generally I just get on with whatever needs doing and "grin and bear" it. I think it would be totally amazing if it were ever to go away - actually I can't imagine life without my bad back LOL!!

Yes i'm suffering and have been since may. Had an MRI scan just before xmas and was told I have 2 prolapsed discs to left and one to right and that the bottom quarter of my spine is aged to the equivilant of a 50 year olds (i'm only 28!!). Was offored an epidural quortisone injection for the pain (I declined as its getting better) If I don't fully recover last resort is an op!!! Still riding but only 1/2 times a week and just short hacks, Have good days and bad, trouble is my job doesn't help it either!! Just have to grin and bear most days.

ETS I also have a dodgy neck after breaking it in Jan 2003. the position they set my neck in doesn't help the strain on my lower back. Just about to start yoga and pilates in a bid to help it along side the osteopath I see.

I get terible pain in my lower back sporadically throughout the year, it cripples me completely for a day or two!! I go to a good osteopath and do some stretches etc have a lot of hot bathes and keep moving, moving and gentle excercise relieves my pain!! If needs be and I cant take it easy, I take a lot of pain killers and get on with my usual day, all be it a bit high from all the drugs!!!

I have a bad back from wear and tear due to working with nags/lugging hay about etc. Doctor reckons its ligaments. He recommended a book called Treat Your Own Back and its been brilliant.

Have always had a nagging bad back since a fall I had doing xcountry when I was 15. About 6 months ago I started going to yoga once a week and I now get no discomfort from it at all. I can only think its strengthened the site of the old injury

Always had problems with mine, and nearly had to sell my horse a few years ago as I was like a cripple and I was only 25. Tried physios, oesteopaths and chiropractors but nothingg worked, until I found a chiropractor that uses the McTimmoney Technique. It cost me a small fortune to visit him but after about 10 months I feel like a brand new person, and the money was well spent. Still get the odd twinge now and again but just pop back to visit him and he sorts me out.

Painkillers...Mmmm, they are the bane of my life!

For many many years I took distalgesics with voltarol, then as the pain got worse I moved up to cocodamol, then tramadol and diazepam.

Unfortunately my body started reacting badly all all these different drugs and I am now VERY allergic to aspirin, tramadol and codeine. I also cannot take voltarol any more as it upsets my insides like you could not possibly imagine (even when taken non-orally... yes, work it out

).

The only painkiller I could rely on and take safely was the distalgesics (coproxamol) but they have now been withdrawn so all I can take is oramorph (oral morphine) and ibuprofen. I don't like to take the morphine too often as I don't want the effect to be any less when I need it, I also don't want to become dependent on it, oh and there's the small issue of driving my car after I've taken it (not recommended!).

I live on ibuprofen, even though it gives me a dodgy tummy, and does very little for the pain. I also have a private 'stash' of coproxamol which I am hoarding and using sparingly as when they are gone they are gone

Ive had a chronic bad back since the age of 13. Don't know what triggered it.

Since then I have had bone scans, xrays, MRI's etc, seen a phsyio etc and it was still no better.

Back in June time last year I started seeing a Chripractor and it made a world of difference and was totally pain free. Sadly though, I cant afford to keep going and now its bad again

I do. Wakes me up at night and sometimes I can't go to sleep without medicine and a hot water bottle. Sometimes I can't even move I'm in so much pain.

I can't actually remember a day that I wasn't in pain. It's just sort of constant now so you learn to ignore it.

It's MUCH worse with riding unfortunately.

I'm also terrified of doctors so I'm yet to see one about it.

Blimey, well it's nice to know I don't suffer alone, what a lot of old crocks we are. I too have very bad back mostly due to having police motorcycle flip over and land on me at 55 mph (Yes, I was the rider not just unlucky) following an op and lots of neddy related falls, I've recently bought a really good back support that helps if I have to stand for any length of time and have a wonderful osteopath I visit.
