Is there a "proper" amount of plaits one should have when showing? I quite like the look of lots of tiny plaits, but friend likes the look of fewer, larger ones.

Depends very much on the type of neck - have a couple of practice runs and what suits.
Personally I always go for an odd number on the neck with gridlock making an even number but that's just an old superstition :-)

This is the neck that shall be wearing the plaits :) I hear you should aim for bigger plaits in the middle to make him look like it's thicker?

I always do 7, 8 including the forelock. T-bag has a mane like a mountain yak and the other two girls have 'proper manes' but still do the same amount regardless. Only takes me 20 minutes from start to finish. I always sew them.

I was trying to remember how many you said to put in! Almost text you, but didn't want to bother you :P Well, you saved me the trouble by commenting haha!

Ned is still a massive pain to plait ¬¬
Took me nearly 2hrs to do them last time!!

Pen_Name - I LOVE that look! No patience to do them though :P haha!

For showing, 7. Plaited upwards to create hoods for them, to really bulk his neck up.

For anything else, as many as possible- managed to get 21 down Reg's neck once. He has 7 for showing though!

I was always told odd number down the neck (so even number including forelock) as otherwise it can split their neck into two.

Odd number on the neck and even including forelock. All the same size.Depends on the horse, the more plaits the longer it makes the neck look.

I'd say go for small 'upwards' ones too as I think he would look silly with few big ones!
