Two, sort of!
My original RI gave up teaching to join the police, and recommended her instructor. I've been having lessons with her ever since, so nearly 8 years now on and off. I'll keep having lessons with her until she retires.
I tried two and it was the second one who was 'the one' but then she couldn't carry on teaching at our yard so I had to find another one.
Third one was radically different and we had her for a few months before current trainer agreed to train our yard. Been lucky enough to have him three weekly for the last 10 months
I want to go to clinics more often tho with another trainer too. As long as they compliment each others methods.
There are so many trainers available, and each has a different take on things. It is difficult to find the right one unless you try some out, but then you often hear of 'bad' things from others which then you either choose to listen to or ignore.
About 3, spoke to a couple who turned their noses up at coming to teach me because my horses were exracers too...
Then I met Cruiser through HHO and things started looking up...! Been having lessons with her on and off the last few months. My horses have improved, I have improved (I hope!) and probably most importantly we're all really enjoying it. She has also been schooling my horses and showing me what they are capable off, which has been great to watch. I look forward to every lesson now and am more motivated to ride at night so we can practise our 'homework'...! lol!
I think you've got to work out how you like to train your horses, what your principles are and what your goals are then find a trainer with the same thinking as you.
It took me a long time to find someone I feel 'compatible' with. He agrees with how I see my horses progressing and I feel his techniques are perfect for what I want. I couldnt train with someone who wanted me to have the horse going in a way I didnt agree with...
I think Boss is spot on. You need to know what your own principles towards training are, before trying to find a trainer
There are a fair number of different techniques and training methods in dressage and your own outlook should be taken into account.
Ive had quite a few trainers in my time. My last one was an excellent match for jack and i as she was classically trained herself and had bought jack as a 4 year old and brought him on. So she appreciated my views on how horses should be treated and trained and she knew Jack very well also
I stick adamently to quite traditional techniques so to put me with a trainer who uses more radical modern (and for me, rushed, methods) wouldnt cultivate a good relationship
When I broke my leg I wanted to send J to a woman I knew but she was a few weeks pregnant and didnt want to risk taking on a nutcase. So she found someone else for me who was willing to take him, she is an advanced eventer, not too far from me, so seemed like it might work. I had a long chat and really got on with her, and liked her methods. She had him for a month and a half and has been teaching me ever since. I have improved so much since having lessons with her, and she really knows J now too so works really well.
So I am secretly please about the broken leg as don't think we would be where we are if I hadn't had that fall
I used to have Mandy at the yard I was at before, I loved her lessons and Axey was going really well.
I then moved yards and one of the rules was that no outside trainers were allowed, we had to have lessons with the YO (an event rider) I didn't really click with her way of teaching so for over a year I struggled on my own.
I eventually found Markus Bauer and went to him, he was brilliant and I learnt loads, but I had to go to his yard, and with no transport of my own was very difficult.
I then moved yards to where I am now which does allow outside instructors, and got in touch with Mandy again to ask her if she would come and teach me there. She said she would even though its a good 2 1/2hr drive for her.
Axel has improved so much with her and I intend to have Mandy as my trainer for ever now!
On the flat - I was lucky enough to find a brilliant trainer on a friends recommendation when I didn't seem to be getting anywhere with my original instructor. She managed to spot basic problems with my position/tack/riding in the first session that had never been remarked upon before but made total sense. I have been having lessons from her for about 4 years now and learn something in every single session.
Jumping - I now also have a fantastic jumping instructor too - she took more finding - I stuck with my original instructor for ages through loyalty - she was/is a friend but we just didn't hit it off as instructor/pupil and she really didn't seem to be able to help me and I felt totally stuck in a rut. I then tried another instructor on a friends recommendation but I didn't like the way she rode my horse on the one occassion that she got on her and didn't find her methods really helped with the problems I was having at the time. I then found my current instructor off the list of BSJA accredited coaches and knew she also taught another girl I know that gave a good report. Jenny and I probably improved more in our initial 3 or 4 lessons than we had in the previous year and have exceded all of my expectations for where we were heading with our SJ. I've been having lessons with her for about a year now.
Now I have found my "key people" I can't see myself changing to anyone else.
I watched their lessons, saw them ride, saw their progress, heard their views.....watched them teach a variety of horses to see if they changed their teaching depending upon horses character/rider etc.......
I dont think I will ever find 'the one' Ive had loads of instructors and ive taken and learnt lots from each one- i dont regret any of them. I seem to get to a point with each instrctor where the relationship goes a bit stale and i dont feel like im progressing as i would like to... so i try someone else, they bring fresh ideas and see me differently so teach me differently... My current instrctor is lovely and i get on really well with her hopefully we will continue to improve so i can stick with her!
ETS I have a young horse who i have backed so I am only now just really riding her properly, my last instructor and i had been treating her as a baby for a bit too long..!
