I have a rising 3 tb mare - she is lovely, sound, I have been letting her down after racing. I need to sell her as I am lacking in time to do anything with her really. I think she wold be a really nice mare eventually, I am just over stocked at the moment, I have 3 others that all need my attention and she just isnt getting it. How much do you think I should sell her for?
Alternatively, is 3 far too early to put something in foal?
I am genuinely confused, I usually get them out of racing and re-train them to sell, it was my intention with this mare but I am just not going to have the time.

It's too late this year to put her in foal really so presumably if you do it next year she'll be rising 4 but I wouldn't have thought that will help your overstocking situation!

A green TB isn't going to be worth much unfortunately, I would say finding the right home for her is going to be a bigger priority unless you keep her over the winter and start producing her in the spring.

Was thinking about £500 for her, or just turn her out over winter and let her have babies next year...hmmm decisions decisions....

Please don't breed from her!! There are far too many horses in the UK needing homes without adding to the pool. Do you know how many TBs are sent to the slaughterhouse now?

I'd look at quietly working her over the next few months, with a view to selling her in the spring. £500 is too little imo. Price her to get the right sort of interest in her, rather than a pot luck purchaser. No horse deserves that.

Firstly, I take on ex racers. She is one of the four I have, three of which are out of racing, one of which is a tbx out of a british bred tb mare and a british bred wb, and I have a further 2 ex racers on my yard which I have sold to clients.

Secondly, she has good breeding, is well put together, and I would put her to a good, most likely british bred, stallion with the aim of producing something which would take me beyond the levels I currently compete at.

What seems to be the problem here?

You asked for opinions and this is mine.

You have also stated that you are overstocked so how is breeding from her going to help that situation?

If you are lucky enough to be given these horses to rehabilitate then perhaps that should be your first priority, it seems you have high hopes from your previous posts about going to HOYS etc. so perhaps you already have your superstar at home already?

I am overstocked in the way that I am schooling 2 4 year olds, and maintaining another one, and yes, hope to go to HOYS on one of them next year, and beleive he has the potential to go all the way. I do not have the time to start another one in the next couple of years. I have my own yard, lots of land, and a part time groom, so the care is not a problem - all my horses are groomed and ridden every day by me (I muck out too, the groom does them in the mornings) .

I will have time to do another one, probably after next summer when the 'superstar' as you call him gets really going...and when the two other youngsters are more established (and if I breed from her, thats going to be 5 years time for the foal, and a good 2 and a half years for her)

I value your opinion - when do you think it is apporpriate to breed from a mare? It was an idea I had as I like the mare, I just dont think rushing is going to do her justice.

4yo is a good enough age to cover a mare.
If shes that well bred why don't you put her to a marketable stallion, and sell the yearling for enough money to pay for 10 more?

Oooh I dont want 10 more...one will do! I just want something with a bit of a ping in it, to see how far we will go. None of mine really ping yet!

They are all ex flat racers and sort of get it, sort of dont, depending on what mood they are in
