how much and what would you do?

My dad has a 16hh 5 yo TB gelding that he bought on a bit of a whim, and is thinking of selling him now - although i think he should wait a bit. He hasn't done a great deal - he's showing promise with his jumping ans has done a bit of novice SJ and XC, needs work on the flat, has an incredible sweet nature (much friendlier than any horse I have ever met) and is good hacking/to do etc.

Would be a perfect project or just happy hack for someone, although I think we'd be better doing some more of the bringing on so dad can make some money on him! He also loves him to bits and doesn't really want him to go but is wary that if he leaves it til the end of the summer it's not the best time to sell.

so what do you guys think???

But he would have to be a total dope for my mum to hack and cheap as the courts have yet to pay out on the last horsey 'mistake'

To do this lovely horse justice, I think it would be wiser to sell him on to someone who is capable of putting in the work and competing with him. If you have the time and facilities to do this yourself it will add value to him. However this would take up the summer months and towards winter he would be more difficult to sell.

I think you need to weigh up, how much he is worth now, if you kept him and did the work over summer, how much he would then fetch. If you consider the difference to be about £1k to £1.5k, let him go. Keeping him over winter will only eat your profit and you would not be in a better position.

Also for the horse's sake, to bond with a new owner when they can spend lots of time with him, is now, the summer months. As soon as winter comes, we all have to reduce our riding and mucking out etc takes over your time.

I appreciate you really care for him, but if he has to be sold I think you would be giving him the best chance now as many more people buy this time of year. You can afford to be more selective over who buys him.
