my mare has artritis in front pastern and has been on a bute a day and is sound - i am trying to lower the dose and as from wednesday i have been giving her 1 bute every other day - this morning she was lame in her first trot on her hack (we had walked for a good half hour before) the vet has told me to work through it so we did more walking then her trots and canters home were ok - my question to all you clever people is: do you think its better to give her 1 bute every other day or 1/2 sacet every day???? I am trying to tweek it so the level is right to keep her sound. Thanks guys x

I'd talk to your vet, as they will have an better understanding of your mares arthritis and how the dosage and when it's given will effect her soundness.
I had a mare with arthritis and we gave her a sachet the night before she was worked, so if your mare is ridden every day, i'd prefer to give her 1/2 a sachet but i would still talk to your vet

Depends on the size of your mare tbh. Angel is a 13hh gypsy cob and she was on 3/4 sachet morning and night when she hurt her hip.

Agree with Gabby, your best bet is to ask your vet the correct dosage

thanks gabby8tia - the vet has said it will be trial and error and to fiddle about with it till its right - i just wanted other peoples opinions after their experiences as to what would be best x

Is there a specific reason for her not to have a full bute per day? Its a pretty small dose anyway and it would be a shame to cut her down to a level where she may still have a bitof discomfort but not necessarily show it.

Try a half a day for a week and see what happens but I wouldnt be worried if I had to use a sachet a day. Lots of horses are dosed at this level permanently.

oh i didnt know that spaniel - i have got it into my head that i should try to cut it down - but perhaps you are right she is really sound on 1 per day - is there really lots of horses maintained on bute permantly - perhaps ill do a pst to see how many - it will help reassure people like me x

I used to use one every other day on my old TB - but she was more still than in pain. If doing more work, ie the odd half day hunting she had one the night before, one in the evening and one the next day to make sure she was comfortable.

Some seem to do well on half a day and others every other day - as you said experiment. Personally 1 bute a day is not a high dose and if she is ok on this I would be inclined to leave it. My friend's cob used to have 1 danilon a day to keep her sound.

Cairo does not get any effect on 1/2 and really needs 2 to keep him comfortable. When he was lame two years ago he needed 4 a day but he is 750 k.
