Hi all ,
I found a horse I really really like and had a fab first viewing . I am away for week but I asked if I could pay a deposit subject to second viewing and vetting .
how could I formally word it and what % do you usually pay ?

What do you mean "subject to 2nd viewing and vetting"? You should, I think, expect to lose the deposit if you reject the horse after the second viewing unless the horse does something really bad or is unsound, otherwise it serves no purpose for the owner to hold the horse back from other viewings for you. I would, depending on the value of the horse, expect to pay at least £500 but not more than 5% of the horses value.

The issue is I tried the horse on the sun and went away on the Monday .
after being decked by another horse in previous years I vowed always to go back and try again

I've never done a second viewing. If I like it I buy it, before someone else does. My last purchase I didn't leave a deposit, just negotiated price, said I'd have her subject to vet and booked the vetting. As a seller I'm not sure how I'd feel about holding a horse for a second viewing, especially at this time of year. Worth an ask though, and I'd probably go with 10%

Agree with the others that the seller might be reluctant to take a deposit dependent on a second viewing. Have they definitely got other people lined up to view? It was unlucky timing for you with a holiday!

I have left 10% a couple of times. That is for satisfactory vetting though, not a second viewing. I've never had a second viewing.

I also tell the vet about the deposit so, if it isn't suitable on vetting, the fact isn't put in a woolly fashion on the certificate.

I wouldn’t take a deposit for a second viewing. I’d want a certain amount of money which would be kept if you decided not to buy or put towards purchase price if u did!

I don’t think I have ever taken a deposit, if I don’t trust you you’re not taking my pony home! I have paid a deposit though because “that’s my pony and I am definitely taking it home”. 10% usually!

Yes, I was wondering what the point of the deposit would be.

I would not pay a deposit at this point (nor would I take one). Just book the second viewing for as soon as you get back and then go from there. I would take the chance of the horse selling to someone else in the meantime. In my experience it is unlikely but if it happens then that is just life and I'd keep looking.

I wouldn’t accept a deposit based on another viewing if I were the seller. They might potentially lose out on an actual buyer in the meantime.
I would take a deposit for a vetting, but for another viewing I wouldn’t take anything and would tell the interested party that the horse was still for sale in the meantime and having viewings.

Just me though. They might take it! But be prepared to lose it.

I have always left 10% deposit if seller will take it however only to show my commitment to buy (or vet, on the rare occasion). I wouldn't leave one if I still wanted to do a second viewing.

She’s just sent m her bank details and confirmed back to me that this is refundable if the second viewing doesn’t go well
