Have managed to save up some money and have had a look on a website for a local company that does courses to get you through the test.

I have been towing on L plates for years, and am quite confident reversing (perhaps more to the left than the right, but can do it), hitching up etc. But I'm sure I have plenty of bad habits and don't do it by the book so planning on having lessons.

Any experience on cost so I know how far off I am would be much appreciated!

I'm in the same situation as you, been towing a single trailer for a couple of years (weights all worked out) but want to do my test and get a double trailer.

Spoke to my local training centre who quoted £120 +VAT for 3.5 hour sessions using my own vehicle and trailer. He recommended 3 sessions taking my experience into account. The test itself is £115.

I have decided to buy the "How to pass your towing test" book have a couple of sessions with my OH's father for free to try and iron out any bad habits and take the trailer round the city where the test centre is and then put in for my test. It strikes from posts on here that a lot of people fail first time, nerves etc. If I fail miserably I will then have a rethink about some lessons.

I have passed my trailer test! I had someone fairly locally over at dunsfold teach me in my trailer, we towed over there and he taught me. was pretty cheap as well.

The test cost me £90 2 years ago, so might have gone up. its good to have lessons just so you know the exact reversing required- The only really difficult bit is the reversing, unfortunately, as you have to reverse in a tight backwards 's' shape into a bay, only allowed to pull forward once!
